This was built by Sundowner Trailers in Coleman, OK. They specialize in horse trailers but build very nice cargo trailers also. I had mine custom built 9" narrower than standard so it was more in line with the Airstream. It is 100% welded aluminum construction (except axles), floor beams on 12" centers, diamond plate on ramp, suncoat (kind of like Rhino Lining) on interior 3/4" plywood floor, 6,000lb stainless steel Swivel "D" Ring tie downs thru bolted to welded in aluminum backing plates, 4 wheel brakes, all LED lighting, aluminum wheels and radial tires. I'm very pleased with the quality and attention to details.

I would like to say at this point that some of our Forum gripes have less to do with the Interstate and more to do with the interstates. My God, with that kind of road trip it becomes brilliantly obvious that all the "crumbling infrastructure" political talk is not just talk. I'd estimate that 80% of the interstates we took were in serious disrepair. I don't expect perfection, but I would like for the glass lenses in our coach lights not to shatter from the force of hitting unavoidable craters (one did on the way up here). These highways are a national disgrace. My husband is happy, though, because I gave him carte blanche on getting air suspension.

Here's another view of Interstate life on a deserted beach. . Attachment 268210
Makes one wonder where that $10 trillion that we overspent the last eight years went.

Please---Approximately how much moola to have a trailer like yours built? It looks like a beautiful thing, especially narrowing it for non-interstate roads and Mexican roads. Thanks in advance for information. AEW

Here's the breakdown on mine: List base price: $8,222, Ramp instead of rear door: $892, Spare Tire & Mount: $254, Suncoat on floor: $252, SS Swivel Tie-downs, 5 @ $82 ea, Roof Vent: $130, Custom Narrow Width: $500. I also had some extra backing plate installed for motorcycle chocks at a cost of $300. The total came to $10,960. My dealer discounted it down to $8,919. then we added $225 for ATP stoneguard on front. Shipping to CA would have added around $900 but I picked it up at the factory while on a trip. Also when I got home I had my dealer add a couple more tie-downs and some sidewall vents. There are obviously much less expensive trailers out there but this one is top quality in every respect. Your price is going to depend on what a dealer is willing to do for you. The standard size on mine is 12' x 6'9" but I had mine built 12' x 6'0".

They come standard with a 32" side door and they come equipped with very nice keyed cam-bar latches on side door and ramp so you don't need padlocks.(latches are keyed alike).

I carry a breaker bar with a handle extension and a small bottle jack. I screwed a Pit Posse bin to the floor beneath the spare to store jack and tools. Strap hangers will go on each of the two shear panels on the angle walls.

Our most unusual boondock to date - at the base of a well-known Nova Scotia lighthouse, small but mighty and recently restored by a local "friends of" type community group.

We did not go there with any such intention, but I had followed its restoration story in the Canadian newspapers, so I wanted to see it in person. On the road leading to it, we happened to meet a distinguished-looking gentleman and we struck up a conversation (which is what you do in NS when you meet people - as in, every single time, you strike up a conversation). After a few minutes of chatting, he gestured toward our Interstate and noted somewhat coyly, "Sometimes people do park here overnight." Knowing the NS regulatory climate, I replied, "That's against the law." He noted, "Well, not if the lighthouse caretakers invite you."

Remember this Interstate anecdote the next time you're debating whether or not to shell out the money for more solar capacity. How would you like to receive a once-in-a-lifetime offer like that, only to have to turn it down because your batteries were too low? Personally, I think I'd shoot myself.

Before nightfall, we turned and pointed the Interstate's tail toward the ocean, so that we could leave open the rear door and listen to the waves hitting the beach below the cliff. But I like this high-sun photo with the blue, blue sky, which I took just after we pulled up to the lighthouse.

Coming back out of a mountain road that is off limits to motorhomes and trailers, I thought this would make a good Interstate meme, because this sign was so perfect.

IB, great stories & photos. !!

I didn't know how convenient this extra parking area would be when I had a section of my driveway repaired. I checked the spare tire pressure, generator oil and battery terminals.

Your driveway is great! We sure could use a configuration like that!

I've gotten a couple of PMs and emails about our in-progress trip... I'd encourage other people to also share their adventure details in some form. We do a ton of talking about this improvement and that improvement, and one Interstate problem or another problem, but details on the culmination of all that effort are usually absent from this forum - the reason why we go to all that trouble to fix and improve everything. And on that note:

BTW, to answer this question, we averaged 20.5 MPG across 5,834 miles. Total diesel cost came to $694. Diesel is more expensive in Canada but the exchange rate is good right now.

That was MPG under conditions of high speed travel and maximum load. My manifest read 297 pounds of cargo, all-in (I weighed everything during the loading process). Half of that was food, potable water, and drinks (excluding water used for washing and commode, but including the weight of the Yeti cooler itself, dry ice and water ice, and the total weight includes our hitch carrier). The food easily stretched for two adults 18 days, plus two more adults for 7 days, so a total of 50 adult-days of food. With that, I probably had 20 pounds left over upon return (I didn't weigh). We did have to take on some milk and drinking water during the process, and we did eat out electively several times (a few Cracker Barrel custom omelettes, plus lobsters, one pizza, two Chipotle burritos, and a couple of Subway sandwiches for the fresh veggies).

Wow. I must be lead foot. 16.5 mpg is about best I do between NC & IL via VA, WV, OH, IN. I know there is mountain range and my 16 us an Ext model and I drive 75 mph most the time. Is this best I'll do? (I'm fine with that, given the 9 mpg alternative of C-Class & 4 mpg of a Pusher.

On my NCV3 3.0l V-6 turbo-diesel with RennTech ECU tune, as long as I keep it to 60mph or less, I get about 19 mpg not towing my Honda, and 18mpg towing. But fuel economy drops off rapidly at speeds over 60mph. My best fuel economy ever was just over 22mpg on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway bridge, with a tailwind and speeds limited to 45mph due to construction.

The T1N Interstates have an in-line 5-cylinder, and a lower GVWR, both of which lead to better fuel economy on average.

Mike

That's what I got this trip driving 70-75 in SC and NC mountains. Get 17.5 in the flats of Florida.
