Overhead Dual USB Charger for Dashcam + TST TPMS
Overhead Dual USB Charger for Dashcam + TST TPMS
Even with the WACHUKO mod (2x dual usb chargers on dashboard), I just realized I still end up with 2 usb cables dangling from overhead console from TST TPMS & the Nexar Halo dashcam. Big annoyance for me - I despise unruly cabling. This neccessitated another dual usb charger install on
the overhead console area between dome light & rear backup monitor.
PS, Also gave me the opportunity to clean up all that camera/monitor cabling mess inside the overhead.

Great idea!
Is there a 12V source up there? Where did you tap in?

Nicely done.
Where did you find a small, squarish 12 volt to dual USB adapter?
Part number/source/URL, Please! Need one for my rig to reduce the wires dangling everywhere from stuff by my mirror!

WACHUKO - I re-oriented the position of the usb charger and re-routed the pos/neg wires to minimize length of usb cables. As you can see from new pic, my dashcam cable is barely 3" and TPMS cable is about 5". Instead of the pos/neg coming out of rear monitor mounting hole, I took it out from headliner because there is already a natural gap up there. A suggestion for you if you do not mind boring the same size hole for the round dual usb charger - you can mount it on the headliner directly above monitor. I didn't want to do it for now because I was not sure of exact location to bore my hole yet, plus I have few of these spare external dual usb chargers that I installed in our Polaris quads. Don't bother trying to see if you can fit it inside the black plastic compartment. Ain't enough room in there for the depth needed for the round ones. The lane assist electronics take up all the room in there. Now that I can see how it all fits, when I return from SoCal in 2 weeks, I will bore the hole on headliner and convert the external to the round ones.

BOOM23 - Yes, there are numerous 12v sources up there for dome lights and rear monitor. I was originally going to run a separate line down to fuse box, but my TPMS & Nexar Halo dashcam only draw 0.5-0.7A total. So I decided to run it off the rear monitor line which typically draws 0.4-0.5A and is fused for 3A.

RMKRUM - there are many choices (also read my suggestion to WACHUKO above if you want to go straight into a recessed internal round unit (like we used for the dash chargers). The square'ish units are made for external mount, i.e. motorcycle, quads, snowmobiles, etc. They typically have dust caps, and use SAE quick-connectors, similar to ones used for trickle charging batteries. However, if you decide to go for the Qualcomm QC 3.0 Quick Charge units (come in round internal mount or square'ush external mount) be aware those things can pull a max of 5-6A total, so it needs to be fused accordingly and probably best to run a line down to fuse box. Not that hard to do. For my use, the charger is a 2.4A per port unit and will never draw even close to that much, so the 3A fused line is more than adequate.

Many thanks for the data--now have several possibilities to consider...

Alex, will see if I can find a compact rectangular one to install on the cover. Is there enough room for it? Depth wise?

WACHUKO - I don't think there is enough depth even for that, if you go straight on, coz even though the body is not too deep, the strain relief part of cable is pretty stiff and does not bend too easily. But sideways it might. The other thing I thought of is I may just keep my current square'ish unit and hide it inside the black enclosure or above the domelight/headliner. There is certainly enough room in both areas for it. Then just have 2 skinny usb cables coming out the same small hole for rear monitor. Come to think of it, that would be way cleaner look - it ain't like I will ever need to plug anything else up there, right? Glad we brainstormed a bit, it gave me even a better idea (for my use). Of course, if you intend to be using it constantly for 'other' devices, then best to have the ports accessible.

WACHUKO - Here ya go, stored the dual usb charger above dome light. Way better, cleaner look, shorter exposed cable, and saves me from buying a flush mount unit. Win, win for me.
