More counter space

It is sometimes a little crowded when preparing meals in the Interstate. To make more space, I added a pullout shelf under my wardrobe. It's on drawer sliders and locks into place when closed. It's about 17 x 17 inches and adds a surprising amount of additional work space. Click image for larger version

That's pretty cool!

Are you for hire? People are going to want to know.

That's beautiful and a great idea. If you're willing to sell them, sign me up. Otherwise, can you share what kind of wood you used? Maybe I can get some more handy than me to build me one. Thanks for sharing.

Looks great and really enhances the space. I was thinking about something like it but again did not go be one thinking.
I turned the door so I can open it and reach inside even when the bed is up as well as put a mirror in the inside for the misses heir procedure in the morning.

I sure could use one of those! If you're accepting commissions, could you do a "light camel" version?

And one question… what kind of weight capacity does it have?

Good idea. Was standing in my unit today commenting on lack of prep space.

Great job! What kind of wood did you use for the exposed trim?

Great job! I also added a pull-out drawer under my curbside wardrobe, but it's for a place to charge our mobile devices. Click image for larger version

For the countertop extension I made this from a sheet of stainless steel and plywood. The edge trim is solid oak with black wood stain and three coats of poly. Click image for larger version

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Glad that you like it. Boxster, I like your setup also.

For those who have asked:
- I ordered a set of RV drawer slides (they have a detent to keep the shelf closed in the retracted position). I ordered from wwhardware.com ($28 KV 8400 RV Full Extension with Stay Close 18" with side mount hardware)
- I picked up a small piece of 3/4 inch (~24"x 20") finish grade 3/4" plywood and had it cut to approximately 16.5"x 17.5 inches (from what I can recall) $22
- I had an extra strip of 1 3/4 oak trim (I used that for the front and side face)
- Picked up a can of Onyx colored stain $5

My initial thought was that I would give it a shot and if it worked out well, I'd likely order a piece of the counter top material to use instead of the plywood. However, now that it is in, I'm going to stick with the wood.

I'm not sure of the max weight, but I've had a big pot of water and a few bottles of wine on it (35 lbs?) and it did just fine.

If I were to redo it, I'd add a bottom to it and use bottom mount slides (versus the side mount slides) and go with the 'soft touch' open/close slides to add a little extra 'cool factor' to it. It would take a little extra vertical space, but would also provide a 'lock' in the extended position as well as the retracted position.

Kaylorson - Thanks for the extra details a very nice project. I too have found that using black/ebony wood stain on oak or teak can come close to matching the Airstream onyx interior. FYI there is a Wilsonart laminate called Asian Night that is a perfect match to the Airstream laminate.

Also the countertop is a Corian solid surface product called Hazelnut.

Hi
I know this thread isn't about upholstery but I see that you have the light color
I believe it's called oyster. I have the same. Have you found a good cleaner that works well.
Same question for the walls of the unit that loo great but smudge easily.
Thank you
Ben

Welcome to the Air Forums.

Not sure what to use on the suede cloth on the walls but I use a cleaner that I got from Griot's Garage for the upholstery.

Glamper1, if your upholstery is ultra-leather, it can be cleaned with a damp cloth & a cleaner. I use Simple Green with good results. It can be used full strength or diluted.

Drawer addition for storage is great; exactly what I need. Can you provide source?
Thank you!

More counter space

Sorry no special source. I made it from scraps around my shop. The drawer is the small plastic tool drawer from an old Kobalt tool box I got from Lowes. Then I attached some 1"x1" aluminum angle stock to the drawer with pop rivets. The glider blocks on each side were just made from wood scraps and attached to underside of cabinet with appropriate length screws.

There is a product available at CampingWorld that I considered before I decided to make my own.

Hope this is helpful,
