Not with an Interstate, or even towing, but I have driven through downtown Montreal. It isn't vastly different from most North American cities, although some of the roads are cobbled in the old town and there are a couple of steep ramps around the place; not an issue normally but it was very snowy when I was there.

Just brush up on your French though, Jennian, as signs (especially construction signs) will all be en Francaise. You have to know your gauche from your droit.

A couple of years ago, coming back to Toronto from Newfoundland, we approached MONTREAL from the east, along the north shore of the St. Lawrence, on Highway 138 - The King's Road.

This becomes SHERBROOKE STREET, one of the main streets crossing Montreal from east to west. It's a fascinating drive, more than an hour long.

We stayed the night at a LOBLAW ( Canada's leading grocer) location near the heart of the city, at Cavendish and St. Jacques.

If we had no trouble doing this with our 48' rig you should have no trouble with the Interstate!

We go almost every year. Driving is no problem but parking can be and secure downtown parking is tough. Keep in mind that though Montreal is a fairly safe city, there is a high incidence of auto theft, especially SUV's that end up overseas or in South America. I've parked at a secure storage facility on the eastern side of the island and rented a car or if you don't leave the downtown core, walking is no problem unless it's January and you're waiting outside at the Bell Centre.

Bienvenue à Montréal! We're from Montreal and I think you should be okay downtown. Our Interstate does fine in the city, including Old MTL but please avoid the tiny side streets there (very tight and tough to turn). You'll also want to avoid driving on the Plateau as the streets are tight. And, yes, please be aware that all of our street signs are in French only ... bonne chance!

Parking solutions

We had a great time in Montreal. Stayed at KOA about 15 miles out of the city.
Parked in old port at the clock tower lot and in the lot at botanical gardens without issues.
