Microwave and Generator

Hi,
We just purchased a 2018 interstate. When we run the generator, the microwave does not work...

Can anyone please let us know what the solution is?

When we plug something into the 110, i.e. a hairdryer, it does work...

Thanks!

Judy

If memory serves (I can't remember the last time it failed me, but you never know), inverter powers everything wired for 120vAC but the A/C and microwave. Generator powers everything but the microwave. Shore connection powers everything.

That's just the way the 120vAC breaker panel is wired. Given that the generator only produces 20 amps, not 30 amps like the shore power connection, that's for the best.

The generator will power the microwave, but it takes 2-3 minutes for the gen to warm up and reach full power. Then the microwave circuit comes on and you can use it.

Looks like my memory DID fail me. Luckily I won't remember that it did…

Wait for LED

The generator does power the MW as mentioned above. I wait for the led display to turn on (clock) seems to be a small beep then as well. MW should work then. This is based on a 2012 AI.

Hi, Judy. Welcome to Air Forums. Yes, these other posters are correct - after a short wait, you should see the "0" or other indicator light come up on the microwave itself, indicating that it is now powered.

The key word is "short" - probably not more than a minute should elapse. If you run for several minutes and there's still no microwave, then that is a separate discussion.

Does the microwave work when plugged into shore power? I have had 3 microwave failures and replacements in my 2014.

yes... it is "on" when on shore power. However, after a number of minutes, five or 10, no response when on generator power...

Our older Interstate has two circuits in place between the generator and the microwave.

One is an auto selector switch that switches to generator power when it is available. It has a timer in place which is why there is a delay between turning on the generator and it being available to power your 120v loads. I assume the new Interstates have a power management system that performs this function. It sounds like you're waiting long enough and can power other items from the generator so I would assume this is working properly. If it has manual configuration settings, RTFM and see if it's miss configured.

The other circuit in our Interstate is a priority switch that cuts power to the air conditioner when the microwave is in use. Perhaps your van is doing this load shedding improperly?

This may be a lost connection between the generator power meter and EMS that is used for load shedding/detection of generator running.

Since you probably have the newer Firefly control system, I don't think any of us older users can be helpful on what could be wrong. You are back to the dealer I am afraid.

I agree with Amir, with one caveat. Although you are under warranty with a 2018 and this is not your problem if you don't want it to be, if you are DIY-inclined, you could yank that microwave and test the circuit under both operating conditions, reporting your specific findings to the dealer in advance of a scheduled warranty visit.

IF the problem proves to be well-defined and IF the dealer is willing to believe your version of events in advance of their own inspection, then this exercise might be able to cut your visits from n>=2 to perhaps n=1, thus saving you time and effort in the long run, depending on how far from the dealer you are located.
