Mercedes Sprinter problems question

We have a 2013 AI on a 2012 MB Sprinter. We have about 12000 miles on it. Just got back from a trip to Colorado - beautiful weather and scenery. It was made more exciting with the Sprinter telling us we lost our ABS and ESP. Couldn't tell too much difference in the drive, but that made the cruise control inoperable.

However we also lost all power steering. Yes we could tell a difference on the Trail Ridge Road drive.

Tried to get it looked at in Denver, but couldn't get an appointment for days, so we just drove back home a little early. Learned we needed a new Rack & Pinion for the steering. And one of the speed senors went bad that caused the ABS to stop working.

This is the second wheel speed sensor we had to replace in 2 1/2 years. First time on the rack and pinion. And I don't think these two issues are related, just coincidence they happened at the same time. Of course, we had these all fixed and it is great right now!

Just wondering if anyone else have had these issues?

Thanks, Barbara

Sounds like your problem is unique, at least among AirForums members. But you may want to ask around on other Sprinter forums, because 99% of all Sprinters are NOT Airstream Interstates.

Ours is at 167,000+ miles, and has never had that problem.

Thank you all, I'll try the Sprinter forum as suggested. Just wondering if this is just an odd occurrence that we shouldn't worry too much about.

I have over 60,000 mile on our 2013 AI on a 2012 Sprinter. Have not had any issues. Your mileage is very low. Perhaps Interblog's comment is correct these rigs need to be driven regularily to remain trouble free. I drive mine every week when home and nearly every day when we are traveling.

It is possible your ABS/ESP sensor has gone bad. And if that's the case, then your cruise control will NOT work. (this happened to our 2013). Is it possible the loss of power steering is unrelated?

EDIT: Oh, sorry. I just reread your post. You did state that the items were unrelated.

Our sensor went bad because a tow truck driver towed ours with the parking brake on, and literally melted the sensor. So, it was not just a random failure.

The part of that post that jumped out at me first was the ESP. That is scary. Here is a 3-minute vid that shows the difference between ESP working and ESP not working. I like the tag line painted on the side of the test Sprinter - "comes standard so these bars don't have to".

I operate 6 Sprinters and have never had your issue. However, I write to pass on a potential problem in the event you have a flat tire. For some unknown reason, Sprinters use entirely different bolts to attach the spare tire. Using the original bolts, which are longer will cause expensive damage. The part number for these bolts is 000-990-24-07. They should be included in the spare tire tool kit but are not.

This is only true on the 2500 model Sprinters with only four wheels and alloy wheels. The later model 3500 Sprinters use lug nuts with hub piloted wheels.

Esp/abs

I just had my 3rd and 4th wheel sensor changed. 1st and 2nd were separate events. One of the recent 2 was original equipment. The other had been changed in last 18 mo. 2013 AS Sprinter with 20K miles. I think
MB is aware of frequency of sensor problems. Sounds to me like there is a quality control issue with sensor supplier. I hope it is resolved while my warranty is in place. 2 1/2 more years. I have a valid complaint issue otherwise. I otherwise love my AS Sprinter. MB has been wonderful with service.
