according to a "local" Airstream dealer who does a brisk trade in Interstates, many are being sold to 'soccer moms' and other folks who are not necessarily camping or traveling as we do, but using them for hometown purposes.

must be nice....

Would be kinda cool to run off to your own private bathroom during a long kids soccer "away game", vs. using the portapotties.

We haul our Grandkids everywhere in ours. They were originally meant to be a second, around town vehicle.

We try not to let them use the pottie, as it becomes such a novel plaything for kiddies. . It is great to have the fridge, sink, drinks, snacks, etc.

They would go with us anywhere, anytime.

Just got back from my grandson's soccer tournament in Iowa a couple of weekends ago. It's great to have a "home" away from home. And all of the amenities too.

This is an older thread but I'm going to tack on this update because I can't locate the thread that I really want, which is the thread in which we compiled the best available anecdotal evidence (such as recall references) to try to arrive at an estimate of how many Airstream Interstates are actually being produced, and have been produced in the past.

Of course Airstream holds that information in confidence so it's hard to know for sure, but there's some value in the estimate because the question is more than academic. Many of the service problems that frustrate the heck out of people are occurring in significant measure because the service centers (dealers or private) have never worked on one of these rigs - they don't have the experience to do it right, and they don't have that experience because the rigs are so rare in the first place. And when potential buyers do their research and determine that they'd like to buy a used Interstate produced during year X, they could benefit from the reality check that they might be hunting for a needle in a haystack.

Hat tip to forum user Markopolo on Class B Forum for this graphic. Airstream may indeed be #1 as Lewster noted at the top of this thread, but it's #1 in a VERY small market segment, a segment that represents less than 1% of all rig formats produced. I knew it was low, but I would not have guessed THAT low. It's potentially worth keeping in mind.

The Airstream sales numbers are reported, just not to the public. If you look closer at previous posts in that thread on the Class B Forum there are market shares reported each month by Statistical Services Inc. (SSI). Here is one example.
http://www.rvbusiness.com/2016/12/ss...tober-down-16/

The Airstream share of the Class B van market, reported as Thor, is about 20% per month and has been fairly consistent between 20-25% for past few years. The total reported Class B production is about 300 units per month, making Airstream Interstate production about 60 units per month or about 700+ per year.

A new summary was just published. Indeed, Thor is third of the four Class B umbrella companies listed. I'm not sure how that is resolved against the common claim that Airstream remains #1 in sales with the Interstate.

Roadtrek

The Erwin Hymer Group includes Roadtrek. I would bet Roadtrek outsells the IA.

Generally Airstream makes the claim that they are #1 in sales of MB Sprinter based Class B vans. The others sell versions based on other vans, like Ram, Chevy and Ford. Since Airstream now only makes their B-vans on MB Sprinter they can make that very specific claim.
