Your are correct but there does exist a Federal Law on intrastate firearm transport which I cite here:

Yes, that protects you as long as you are moving through the state. Stop overnight - even in an emergency - and good luck.
Also the last part you quoted is true. In some places it's an affirmative defense. Great. You get to tell the judge all about the federal law you were abiding by AFTER you've been arrested, put in jail, hired a lawyer, and otherwise have put your life in complete disarray.
Bottom line, treatment of firearms from state to state is a complete joke.
