Have you ever wished that your Interstate's rear door windows could open?!

Oh my word - they COULD be made to open! My jaw hit the floor upon seeing this fresh blog post below, which describes a retrofit for the T1N Sprinter. I had always assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that even if there is a modified open-able window available somewhere in the aftermarket, installing it would probably be too disruptive to the Airstream finishes and therefore not very feasible. After seeing that post, I'm not so sure.

All this time, I've been struggling to create one or more screens to use when the back door(s) are left fully open (e.g., #43 in this thread). But one of the main reasons why I/we sometimes have to leave the back door(s) fully open is that there is no way to open their windows to achieve the desired back-to-front ventilation effect (in the southern summer, that "desired" ventilation becomes "required" ventilation). We might could get to the point of diminishing returns just by installing open-able windows, and it would offer better security in certain stealth camping situations in which leaving the back doors open or ajar is a questionable decision.

Why doesn't Air Forums offer a bangs-head-on-desk smilie? Because I would definitely be a repeat user of that. The closest available smilie seems to be this one, interpreted as self-inflicted.


Anyway, I plan to look further into the feasibility of this option as future time allows. And I don't find an existing thread devoted to back door window discussions, so I thought I would plant this one now.

There was a reply comment in here, but the DOS attacks are obviously underway again and the forums database may have gotten rolled back.

I did sew a rear door screen and I'm in the process of converting that prototype to permanent. And it works splendidly, but I certainly can't do THIS (below) while Wallydocking or stealth camping in environments that are more predator-rich than isolated wild lands and campgrounds. For that, it would be better to have open-able rear windows.

I believe it was someone else's comment that I saw right before my screen froze. The site got targeted again and they rolled back the database to X amount of minutes prior to the attack, or something like that, is my guess. Must be some DBAs having a heck of a time with this. No sense writing comprehensive comments until they get it back under control.

Those rear door slider windows are a great find for T1N owners. Too bad there is nothing like it for the weirdly shaped rear windows on newer NCV3 models.

I have searched for this too! Thanks for posting! I always wondered too if there could be roll down windows. That thought has stuck with me since I saw quarter windows in a restored LONG Spartan trailer. I think they said they were from a 1938 Ford or Chevy but were stock. They were sweet.

I agree that all the windows need to open wide like the trailers. There is probably a regulation that prevents them from doing this. I guess it is not enough to warn people not to drive with the windows open, (due to exhaust fumes). It is probably one of those overprotection rules ("for the safety of the people")
I went on line at Colonial Airstream and looked at the new models. Screens are now available for the sliding door and the back doors. I don't know if they can make them to fit older models. However, there may be times when you might not want to have your doors wide open, but it sure would be nice during the day.
