Generator runs for a few seconds then shuts down

Hope it's okay to use this Forum for this question.
I'm on the road now.
Typing this from a coffee shop.
Just turned on the generator...I have a 2014.5 AI
3-5 seconds in it stops
the red light blinks on the indoor starter switch
and blinks a number. I think it was 8115
Not an emergency. I can figure this out later but
if anyone knows, that would be great.
Thanks.
Ben
P.S.- It shows that the tank is 3/4 filled with propane.

Same here! Plenty of propane but won't start.

Mine starts , runs, then stops.

If yours won't start, you might not have the main house electrical switch near the side door on.

Are your propane switches turned on? Maybe defective switch.

Turn off all lights etc. when starting.

My experience with my Onan is that it can be pretty sensitive to altitude, temperature and incline. Also make sure gas is flowing from the kitchen burners. I used to have a list of all those codes, but currently can't find it.

Found this at the Onan site:

FAULT CODE BLINKING
At fault shutdown, the status indicator light will re-
peatedly blink sets of 1, 2, 3 or 4 blinks.
S
One blink
indicates shutdown due to high en-
gine coolant temperature.
S
Two blinks
indicate shutdown due to a loss of
engine oil pressure.
S
Three blinks
indicate a service fault. Press
Stop
once to cause
the two-digit,
second-level
shutdown code to blink. (Pressing
Stop
again
will stop the blinking.) The two-digit code con-
sists of 1, 2, 3, 4
or 5 blinks, a brief pause, and
then 1 to 9 blinks. The first set of blinks repre-
sents
the tens digit and the second set of blinks
the units digit of the shutdown code number.
For example,
shutdown code
No. 36
appears
as:
blink-blink-blink—
pause
—blink-blink-blink-blink-blink-blink—
long pause
—repeat
S
Four blinks
indicate that cranking time ex-
ceeded 35 seconds.

Fault Code Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4 are first level faults.
Pay close attention to the pause sequence to avoid
interpreting first level faults as second-level Fault
Codes Nos. 11, 22, 33, or 44.

To avoid the possibility of anyone misinterpreting
Code
Nos. 3 and 4 as Code Nos. 33 and 44, the lat-
ter have not been assigned faults.
RESTORING FAULT CODE BLINKING
The fault code stops blinking after five minutes.
Press
Stop
three times within three seconds to re-
store fault code blinking.
Note:
The last fault logged will blink even though the
condition that caused the shutdown may have been
corrected.

Hope this is of some help.

Keep cranking it to make sure it is running and Do Not put it under load for a couple of minutes until status lights on your power control system gauge are lt up.

First and most important, make sure you're not trying to start it under a load. In other words, turn off all of the 120vAC appliances, including the ones you've been operating by means of the inverter before starting the generator because as soon as the generator starts it takes over from the Magnum inverter and uses its own. Wait until the generator has been running for about 30 seconds, and then start powering up appliances.

Second, Onan generator fault codes are either ONE digit, from 1 to 4, or TWO digits, from 11 to 46. I have an electronic copy of the manual handy, so if you can tell me the proper code, I can tell you what it means.

Finally, remember, the 2.5kW Onan propane-fueled generator only puts out 20 amps of power, not 30 amps. One of the fault codes (code 15) indicates that the load on the generator is higher than the generator will support.

Mine did the same thing:

It is a LOW OIL safety precaution and turns itself off to protect generator.

Could be. That is Fault Code 23.

I'm positive this will be a great help, thank for posting this.
I'm going to print it and keep it with whatever Class-B we end up with.

One thing though, a 2-Digit LED costs about $0.72 in volume.
Come-On Onan, get with the '80s already.

Neither my hard copy nor the on-line copy that I found has the code breakdown. Could you source your copy? TIA

From the "Boy is my face red" department…

My mistake. I was looking at the wrong Onan manual. That was from the manual for an 8kW generator we use at one of our field facilities, not the 2.5kW model in an Interstate. It's possible that the codes are different for different models, so my previous information is questionable. All the more reason I should retire and turn over all of my work-related files to my successor.

The 2.5kW Onan Operator's Manual doesn't list the fault codes. Neither does the 2.5kw Onan Service Manual. Or the Onan RV Generator Handbook. All of which I have in PDF format. Which makes me wonder why they bother to display fault codes if you have no way of knowing what they mean. As well as making me wonder why the manuals for non-RV generators do list fault codes…

In that case, I think I'll try to contact them and see what I can come up w/. My operating manual doesn't even have the info that I copied from the on-line pdf copy.
