Traffic data comes in via FM radio. See attached page from the Kenwood Quick Set-Up Guide. Also you can read more at this current Garmin web page.

The traffic data isn't quite as good as Waze or Google Maps - but it helps make you aware of delays on you selected route.

Don't know if anyone has had problems getting the 2017 map to be read, but I updated my 2016 maps this weekend and loaded the 2017 on the SD card and they would not be read by the unit. I called Garmin support this morning and apparently this is a know issue with several different units and they are trying to determine why it is failing. They expect a fix maybe in 2 weeks. Now I am without my 2016 maps since the Garmin Express can only see the 2017. (My unit is a DNN991HD)

Try removing the SD card so the unit can read the old maps from built in memory. That assumes only the 2017 maps are on the SD card.

The unit does read the old maps, they are just 3 years old. Yes, the only map on the card is the 2017. If the Garmin Express, when upgrading to the new version would leave the older versions on the card at least I would have a 2016. Appreciate the response.

OK - understand. Try reloading the 2016 map you purchased earlier. I just opened the Garmin Express program on my desktop PC and it will allow me to download an updated copy of the 2016 map I purchased last year. Image attached. But maybe it will only let you use the 2017 map you just purchased.

It would be worth a try. I plan to use this update, but will load it on a separate SD card incase it has same problem as the 2017 map.

Keep us posted on when Garmin resolves the 2017 map issue. I use my Garmin a lot when traveling and like to have the latest maps.

They did refund my purchase of the 2017 map and I thought once they did that I would be able to see the 2016 again with the Garmin Express, but no luck. I sent them an email asking that they put the 2016 maps back to where I could reload them with the Garmin but have not heard from them. I will be calling them today. One lesson I have learned from this is to have 2 SD cards, one for current year and one for the upgrade year. Will keep everyone updated.

I called Garmin Customer Support this morning and they were able to put my 2016 maps back to where Garmin Express would see them. I was able to download and reinstall on the SD card. I am still on the list to be notified when the 2017 issue has been resolved and will post here when I find out.

Lesson learned always have 2 SD cards, one for the current year and the other for the next upgrade year.

Great - thanks for update. I just bought a second SD card to use with my Kenwood/Garmin so I can keep last years map when I buy a new one.

Just tried to load the 2016 map update that Garmin Express told me was available as an update to what I bought last year. But it doesn't work - after I installed the card it would not read the map and only had the base 2013 version in my unit. So Garmin has a bigger problem than just the 2017 update. I'll call them tomorrow to make sure they are aware of problem. Glad I loaded this new update on a separate SD card. Just put in the card with the old 2016 version and all is well.

I just received an email from Garmin letting me know the 2017 map update had been fixed. I purchased, downloaded and installed on my sd card and now the my unit see the 2017 maps. I kept the 2016 maps on a separate sd card.

Updated to new 2017 map today. Cost is $70 and process now works smoothly with Garmin Express App on my desktop PC. As recommended I loaded the new map on my second SD card in case it didn't work.

Since I use my Garmin constantly having updated maps was worth the cost to me.

2017 Garmin Update

When I bought my 2013 Interstate in November of 2016, it had the original 2012 map version loaded to the in dash unit. We knew we would be going on a long trip starting in early April, so I knew I would want to update prior to departure. I waited.....waited.......waited....hoping the 2017 update would appear before we left, but no luck, so I bought the 2016 update. I'm not sure when 2017 was released, but would have liked to have had it for the trip (11,000 miles, two months, 29 states).

Maybe I am being picky and I'm not sure how often the underlying geo files are updated, but there were some inaccuracies that we found. One was the location of Waco, Texas police department. The 2016 version took us to their old location that they vacated three years ago. Fortunately I was operating in "dual mode" using Google Maps on my IPhone in parallel with the in dash Kenwood Garmin unit and I found my way to the new Waco PD building.

It looks like I will need to do the 2017 update prior to our Fall trip.

I also run in dual mode with Kenwood/Garmin and the CoPilot app on my iPhone. I started doing it because the Garmin was so slow at recalculating. But now the Garmin seems better after several updates. I still like being able to compare two navigation solutions.

I also run Co-pilot. My wife will look at Co-Pilot while we are driving and when it and Garmin are different we choose the path we think is best. We also use a hard copy Atlas. Overkill probably. :-)

I have to show this post to my wife. She gives me grief about using the Garmin, smartphone on my lap, and map clipped to the dash.

I run both the built-in Kenwood and my trusty trucker's Magellan, both with the voices on. Some times it sounds like the "ladies" are singing a chorus and sometimes it sounds like a catfight. We have had one say "turn left" and the other say "turn right" at the same intersection. We take whichever route feels more correct.

I have always checked the routes ahead of time on the computer as well as take a close look at possible problem spots with Google Earth. I especially like to check RV park entrances with the street view on Google Earth.

I don't think you can overdo help with navigation, especially in areas you don't know well. In addition to the Kenwood/Garmin and CoPilot my wife has a paper map at the ready. She also gets on either Google or Waze on her iPhone if we need accurate traffic info in large metro areas.
