Front License Plate??

Texas is one of those states that require a front license plate. Know it's a real stupid newbie question but how in the heck do you attach the plate? There are four star-headed bolts where the plate goes; however, their spacing is much wider than the plate itself. There are 4 almost pin size holes that match where the plate should attach; however, they are very small and I doubt I can find bolts or screws small enough and if I did their head would be wide enough to hold the plate in place. Obviously I'm missing something simple and my simple mind does not comprehend.........

Most vehicles have the holes in the right place. Those that don't require a front license plate bracket that when installed will put the plate bolts in the right place.

Are you sure they require front plates for a trailer? They do for cars, trucks, etc., (vehicles), but trailers?

I do not have the trailer anymore. Have a 2015 Interstate. Why wouldn't Mercedes supply the bracket needed?

In that case go to your local Mercedes dealer. Or look in all your storage compartments for the bracket.

Mercedes probably does. But it doesn't matter, because when Airstream installs their "effects molding" it covers the stock bumper anyway. Airstream probably threw the license plate bracket away.

If there are pin holes, then check vehicle manual, you may have to drill pilot holes and use self-tapping screws to install plate. One of my cars was that way. I agree it's dumb.

Have the dealer mount a frame and install. You paid for that as well.

One Colorado 34 foot trailer owner had a better idea. Colorado issues plates in pairs for your tow vehicle. He took one plate and attached it to the back of his tow vehicle. The other he attached to the back of his Airstream. He was full timing and when detached in Nevada, nobody would know the difference... except for myself.

The Trailer plate has TRL on a trailer plate.

Obviously getting away without having to pay the annual trailer tax for the plate.

You have a newer Interstate, but it's the same way with the older T1N's, and yes, we are also in Texas where people can, and do, get nailed for not having their front plate.

Some folks just slap those plates on there any old way, but my husband and I wanted a more presentable solution and so we DIY'd our own mount. Here's a pic and there are instructions in this blog post if you are interested in the details.

I did a little research and it seems on some vehicles the front plate bracket must be ordered when the vehicle is built. It is a no cost option on some. Eliminates putting one on cars meant for states with no front place.

I bought my 2013 AI in Texas and the dealer arranged for and installed the plates complete with a nice frame. Assuming you bought the AI from a Texas dealer I believe they are required to provide a front license plate frame. At least that has been the case with every vehicle I have purchased in Texas in the last 60 years.

On cars/SUVs that I'm familiar with, you simply drill a pilot hole in the dimples in the front bumper fascia that match your plate mounting holes and use self-tapping screws.

My dealer used the blank space to mount there dealership name plate since Kansas is a rear only state. IMHO, front plates are a waste.

Texas takes it pretty seriously. Our toll road authorities read only the rear plate, but the municipal police are largely outfitted with those automatic plate scanners that pull up info on everyone who passes them on the road (they catch a lot of outstanding warrants that way). My understanding is that the front plate won't be going away any time soon for this reason (among others). They want to retain the ability to see who's coming toward them.

If you were in Texas it would cost you a minimum of $200 dollars to express your opinion to the judge who might or might not agree with you but in either case would still assess the fine. I know a few who have learned that the hard way. One was even accorded "free" overnight accommodations in a rural county jail because there was no night court in the county.

On my 2014 Interstate EXT I enclosed the front license plate in a WeatherTech enclosure. It looked very nice, however, the additional thickness set off the front collision sensors.
