I didn't look at the manual but without disconnecting the driveshaft, I believe transmission damage could occur.

Hmm, I assume they disconnected the driveshaft. Will investigate further this afternoon. I'll call the tow truck company and Mercedes. Thanks for the info.

Further investigation (checked the owner's manual pg 270) reveals that if towed for less than 30 miles at a speed below 31 mph, then all that is necessary is to place in Neutral. Otherwise the drive shaft must be removed.

I guess the AI was unlocked since they couldn't tow or load on a flatbed truck if it was in Park. I guess they could have put the rear wheels on dollies but seems like a lot of work.

Hope it works out OK.

Let's think about that for a moment. Whether it was unlocked or not, you can't get it out of park without a key in the ignition. An RFID-chipped key. So if they didn't have the key, then three ways they could have done it:
1 - drag it by brute force up onto a flatbed, with the four rear tires skidding the whole way;
2 - spectacle-lift backwards so the front tires were on the groundó check the propane fill port and the generator for damage in that case because all it would take was hitting one bump and the back end of the van would have bounced against the towbar; or
3 - tow with the rear end on a dolly.

Just talked to Mercedes. He said if it was towed improperly and if any damage had occurred, then they would know it when they drove it. He said that it can really rip up your transmission. This guy was the one that drove it from the dealer where it was dropped off, to the Sprinter service center. He said it drove perfectly. So, looks like all's well.

Protag...they had a key. Our storage facility manager gave them his key.

Still curious how the AI made the journey.

73shark....I'm pretty sure they used the type of tow truck that Protag had posted a photo of in the thread I started called "Help...Chassis and House Batteries Dead" (or something to that effect). That's what our storage manager described. I just got in and still plan to call tow truck company to get more info later today.

If so, be sure to check the front air dam/bumper cover for damage.

I'm not an Interstate owner but have hauled many things and its good to know the exact REAL hight of your vehicle too. Often the tow company will need to know that and wheelbase to decide what to bring to the rescue. They know the bed hight of their trucks. If it's a wrecker, unhook the driveshaft. You can't control the tow driver's driving speed. Wonder if there are tow hooks on the front. Some things good to know aahead of time and hope you never NEED to know!

There is a removable tow hook that screws into a recess on the right side of the front bumper.

Two things to do this spring is to make sure the tow hook attaches and drop the spare to make sure it still does.

I went a step farther and added a "Spare Air" tire inflation system, with the hose running to a bracket on the rear bumper. Now I can check the air in the spare tire and inflate as necessary, without having to drop the spare or crawl underneath.
