Fastest route Pacific Grove to Central NJ

Well, my lazy circle route trip has turned into got to get home reasonably fast from Pacific Grove, CA. Home is central NJ. Considering that I'm the only driver and have 2 daughters with me, what route do you suggest? I'm thinking up to Sacramento and hop on I 80 east!

Interstate 40 looks to be the better route as to mountains and traffic. I'd want to avoid Chicagoland.

Fastest route Pacific Grove to Central NJ

I travel I-40 a lot and have never had any issues using it to get to NC and back. But as with all cross-country trips, keep an eye out for the weather.

40 to 44 thru St Louis is what I meant to write. But 40 all the way is nice, IMO.

I dunno how, but watch for construction

I was on I 80 in NJ and PA last week. They posted warning signs for construction on Rte 46, and Rte 33….But failed to mention I 80 was down to one lane. ( stop and go for an hour )

the kids got me to try the " Ways " ( spelling? ) app. the info comes from drivers on the road. Only drawback was reports of cars on the shoulder, that no one knew to delete, because the cars were already gone.

I just came back from a round trip to the Sacramento area - and took 80 part of the way. Salt Lake City - horrible traffic if you drive in the daytime. 75 miles following Salt Lake City - do your kids like scary roller coasters? If so it's a real treat. From there to Cedar Rapids IA - miles and miles of miles and miles.... SOME seriously pretty but make sure the passengers have lots of games to play and watch your fuel gauge, there are areas where it's over 100 miles to the next services. Don't have T-mobile as your cell carrier. Get off in Davenport Iowa and take 76 through Indianapolis and Columbus. Indy was vacant road when I took it at dusk. I left Ohio and headed southeast - so your route after Columbus will probably be different than mine. I was not impressed with the PA turnpike when I traveled it this spring. Expensive and still/always torn up.

76/40 takes you very close to Jackson Center - so if you want to visit the mothership and do the tour it's a perfect opportunity.

From where you are, nothing makes sense except I-80. We've done all the Interstates cross country and it's easy to avoid city congestion if you want to by using beltways or secondary highways and using a good GPS that lets you know where construction and traffic are.

If you are in a big hurry why not store the unit in Monterey and fly back. Then return to pick it when you have more time.

There is a storage place in Morgan Hill, Ca just up the road that I use. B&P Marine. Nice and accessible. Good advice to store, but I always use I-80 and love it when I am out of California and can speed up over the nicer roads. I only go as far as Iowa and the Mississippi River. There are a lot of nice rest stops for the trailer camper. 2013 there was a lot of construction everywhere but California, it usually was moving along about 35-45MPH.
Pizza Barn in Elko on Idaho St, exit and head to the right going east on I-80, was always a good stop to eat if you are not hurrying (738-2541). And then there are the stops at Cabela's!

I took 70 and 64 to Missouri last week and it was awful construction and bad roads.... 80 was a much nicer ride from PA TO NJ this week.... If it is not the dead of winter, I would always choose 80.

Thanks everyone for ideas and advice. We've started on 80 and are just west of Reno in Nevada to start the day today. We will be stopping for lunch in Elko, but are hopefully trying the Star Hotel on a recommendation from my cousin.
