engine noise

Hi another KNOB question for all of you. I started the interstate yesterday and there was a substantial thrumming noise from the engine. It was constant and fairly loud. I shut the engine off immediately and restarted it and the noise was not present but it threw a CEL. I checked it with my scanner and it was an o2 sensor calibration reading. I cleared it and the whole sequence has not re-occurred.
My question is could this be the turbo resonator failing? It was a resonant type of (rhythmic) sound at first I thought it was the radio. It has 140k on it and the resonator was replaced with OEM at about 80k.
Thanks in advance for any help, this is a GREAT web site for the novice RV'r!

It likely wasn't the resonator. Those typically come apart on long uphill climbs. Not exactly sure what a thrumming sound is but I interpret it as more of a mechanistic sound like from the valve train than the kind of sound you would get from a turbo which would lag the throttle a bit and could be a squeal or screaming sound depending on failure mode.

The noise sounded like the noise a balloon makes when you blow it up and then let the air out only it was more rhythmic. I do not think it was a "heavy metal" type sound.
thanks for the reply!

Sounds like it might be an intake hose or the turbo itself.

I am thinking intake noise as well I am sure the turbo is fine as it runs fine and pulls with plenty of power.
thanks

I have never experienced a sound like that and don't know what that scanner code is, so you're ahead of me there.
Please take the advice of many Sprinter owners and change to the solid aluminum resonator and stop having to worry about it. Nothing as irritating as going into "Limp Mode" on a trip. AEW

I would start with a visual inspection of the charge system rubber hoses and a retorque of all attendant hose clamps. A lot of us in this vintage have replaced the turbo charge hose due to splitting. I agree that it probably is not the resonator as they have a proven record of failing under load, on a warm day, pulling up hill or two. Ask many T1N owners and most if not all will recognize this scenario as similar to their own experience.

thanks for the reply!
When I hear that balloon reference, I think of a possible fan issue.

I think he's referring more to the sound a Whoopee cushion makes.
