Direct LP fill question.

Am planning a trip a couple of months out and am somewhat surprised by the number of campgrounds that sell LP gas but won't do a direct fill. Are there places - like Flying J or TA that will? We'll be traveling north in the cold and will be relying on our propane.

Have you tried Uhaul?

My local one refills on-board RV tanks and according to their website they have the largest nationwide network?

KOA, U-Haul, and equipment rental places. Also there are phone apps available to locate propane refill locations.

I don't think it is legal to fill VERTICAL, portable RV and grill bottles while installed....only permanently mounted horizontal MH tanks. OP has a trailer.

OP also has an Interstate, which has an ASTM tank permanently installed. And since this is the "Sprinter and B-van" forum, we all naturally assumed that the question concerned the Interstate, not the trailer.

But you are correct, in that if the OP wanted to fill the trailer's DoT cylinders, they'd have to be removed first.

Many propane dealer and most Agway type stores and Tractor Supply sell by the gallon and can fill your tank.

Don't be surprised if you can't get the 14.4 gallon fill tho (80% of the 18 gallons tank). On last trip, I ran generator 'til tank was empty and only got about 12.5 gallons in. It was about 92* out tho.

In the NW many gas stations carry propane and will fill the tanks on the trailer.

Ditto on Tractor Supply-
Do you have a bulk plant near you? One local bulk plant filled the tanks on the trailer.
