Dead 2018 AI AGAIN!

After being in the shop at RVOne in Winter Park FL for at least the 7th time in 10 months for dead batteries ) selinoid (sp?) two weeks ago, the van is dead again and I am t leave for key west camping trip tomorrow! Spoke with AI Customer service yesterday and did all they said to do: bought charger and hooked it up for 90 minutes then put it on shore power for 13 hours. Still dead. The step still works and worked yesterday and now Magnum is at least lit but says NO COMM and won’t move from that . Anyone have a weekend number for AI help?

Good idea to start your own thread. For everyone's information, the previous conversation is here, starting at Post #16:

Good luck!

Hi

Basic troubleshooting, start with shore power off / disconnected:

1) Grab a multimeter and check the voltage on the starter battery (should be above 12V)

2) Do the same for the house battery ( also should be above 12V)

3) Check the voltage at the output of the Magnum ( should be same as battery)

4) Plug in to shore power and check the output of the Magnum. It should go up. (like to above 13V)

4a) Check the 120V into the Magnum ( = is the breaker tripped? ) with the multimeter if the
voltage does not rise a bit when it's powered up.

5) Now check the house battery, it should be about the same as the Magnum output.

Best guess is that one or more items on that list will be "nope, that's not what I get". Depending on how many items get a "no", the next steps vary a bit. The following is only a guess:

5) If the Magnum does not raise the voltage, then hook up your charger to the house battery. The voltage should come above 13V after a bit. If it was < 10V to start, it will take longer (like hours). If it does not come above 13V after 12 hours, either your new charger isn't doing the job or the batteries are shot.

Again, that's only a guess, there are *lots* of other directions this could go.

If the chassis is dead, take it to mercedes. I was having low battery warning and mercedes replaced the chassis battery under warranty. No problems since

Imo A camping RV that is intended to be used off the grid should not have any hi-tech stuff that will leave you stranded in some God forsaken place on a holiday weekend with no one within 50 miles. To buy such a vehicle is just asking for an adventure that you can tell you grandkids about.

Keep smiling remember Buy an Airstream some assembly required. I had 76 quality issues with my 27FB Classic Limited. Would never go through that again.

I would suggest that you keep one thread on this going and not start a new one with each question.

It will keep information and replies together for you and anyone else who has similar issues.

Good luck,

Maggie

I don't have a weekend # for AS customer support, sorry. I'm answering your 1st Q. Didn't see anyone else do so.
Re: your no start issues. You would be surprised how many RV problems can be fixed with new batteries. They can age out fast or last for multi years with good care.

Many new RV's need new batts @ delivery & should get replacement batts before being seriously used as an RV. Dealers usually refer the owner to the batt. warranty.

A power converter is basically a battery charger, so use your new charger on your chassis or coach batts when you have shore pwr. until this problem is gone away.
The other members' posts are good & should help pin down the cause.
If it was my coach & I needed to leave for Key West, I would get to W-M, buy new batts & see if that got the coach going. It won't hurt to try.
W-M may take the batts back if you don't want to keep them
I would NEVER give up new, installed batts for some old batts. But, that's just me.
Please let us know how this goes. We all hope you get to KW soon.
& would like to be cruising with you!
Let's Roll !

Good advice IMO. It is difficult to chase down a problem when it is restated in different places, with different facts.

Cheers,

Peter

Thanks Wolf. Charger on batteries for 90 min followef by 13+ hours of shore power didn’t change anything so taking it in in the am tho I may try one more thing: run engine with battery store on. Saw that idea in another thread. And I started new thread as suggested.

I would have rather you said: battery charger on engine batt. for 13 hours. If engine batt. is flat, it may take many hrs. to recharge depending on strength of your charger. I don't know w hat shore pwr does for engine batt. Also, if your inverter is bad, shore pwr won't do anything for batts.

Wow I would never expect that many issues in an Airstream trailer! Awful and depressing!

Hi

Compare that to the 8,927 major issues in the first 2 months on a "typical trailer".

I had zero issues with my Featherlite 7924 all aluminum riveted toy hauler trailer after delivery. A few small items developed over 3 years & the factory fixed them instantly at no charge when I stopped by when returning from Glacier NP. EXAMPLE: The front storage room's stainless holdback was too short after installing the WD bars saddle.

Our Winnebago One 26', Twin slide out trailer only had 14 items which Camping World fixed on 1 visit + a return visit when a few ordered parts came in. We were camped @ Rainbow Plantation, only a few miles away. CW Robertsdale
provides free hookup camping while in for service or warranty work.

I have the Featherlite & our Coach House Type B tow vehicle posted for sale on RV trader. Sadly...

Hi

Indeed a lot of people have no issues with their Airstreams. They are out camping and not haunting forums. If I go on the forums for *any* trailer / car / truck / MH, it's mighty easy to find people with problems ...

Hi

A bit worse since we still have people here talking about how "sick" they were 20 or 30 years ago ... ( which actually *is* quite relevant if somebody just bought a 20 or 30 year old AS).
