Cure our cold weather anxiety please!
Looking for suggestions for favorite destinations to plan ahead for winter trips. Favorite campgrounds, great places to visit, wherever you have been that you want to share.
Above freezing is preferable .

HAWK - Lake Mead National Recreation Area outskirts of Las Vegas, NV. Winters in Las Vegas are what you make it to be. Snow ski in morning, water ski 2 hrs. later, hike & bike in afternoon, then gamble, eat, & see shows at night. Or any order you want to do them. Only couple hrs. to Death Valley National Park which is best visited in winter. I just posted this thread days ago.

Wow, when I posted this I thought we'd have plenty of time to plan to escape the cold and snowy weather! Little did I know it would hit some with vengeance. Hope you all were ready and winterized before the big storm hit, and hope this isn't a warning to a really rough winter season! On the bright side, how glad will we be when we can escape weather like this with our Airstream this winter!! Still welcome ideas for places to visit though! Thanks!

Hi
Weather is *never* predictable months in advance. Heading south in the winter is generally the best bet. How far south and just where is going into the "that depends" category.
One thing to consider: does "above freezing" mean all nigh long or over a 24 hour period? You change the target area a *lot* based on that call.

Today's high temp in greater Houston will probably hit 90. The overnight low was 76. Is that enough cold-weather cure?!
That's abnormally hot, though, and for the next 15 days, highs will average around 75. There are two good windows per year (spring and fall) for seeing southern Texas. This is one of them. Some people wait until even later in the year, but the issue I have with that is that everything turns brown. Right now it's all still green and lush.

Here’s a couple interesting trip ideas to chase 70-degrees for a year. Sounds good to me!

Bob,
My forum name didn’t work out right but it’s supposed to be Hawkeye since we live in Iowa, (and U of Iowa fans, of course).
Anything above 32 degrees in the winter is paradise, so throw a day trip, week trip, ANY trip away from below 32 degrees on this feed and I’ll be your best friend for life!!
Actually, it’s not for just me. This post started from another feed where others were interested in hearing about suggestions on where to travel to.
Throw anything out there, it’s nice to hear your experiences and favorite places to go! Share away, unless you are afraid we’ll take up your spots .
If we don’t end up traveling this winter, it’s always fun to look up the pictures and dream about it for another time!!
Thanks!

The next couple of months are some of our best camping time. We have WBCCI rallies in Sept., Oct., Nov., and December. We start up again in February, March, April, and May. During the summer months, we either head out for cooler country or bide our time.
We do sometimes get freezing nights, but not severe. We just pull our hoses and enjoy the warm interiors. We expect 39 low during our urban rally this week.
The great silver whale is in the driveway, ready to roll in the morning.

Hi
We lived in Kansas for a number of years. The answer there in the winter is pretty simple. If it's zero degrees and 60 mph winds this week, wait for next week. It'll be in the 60's ( and then back to zero again). Indeed Iowa is a bit closer to Illinois, lived there as well. Not quite as likely to pop to 60 in a couple of days.
The (obvious) gotcha is that you don't have an ocean nearby. Heading south to the gulf coast is the simple answer. It's not a perfect answer, but it's the closest good bet. Indeed catching Kansas on a good day might work, the question would be "will it last through the night?"

Hi
Note to self: Avoid Peter Sinks, Utah as a camping option. It just hit -34.7F there.
Of course, 250' higher in elevation it only got to zero. Very much a weird micro climate.

try coastal areas of Central to South California. Temps stay around 70's in winter.

I went into the AI at noon to do some work, wearing just a T-shirt. I heard the wind startup at about 2 PM. I came out at 5 PM at 37 degrees and gusts up to 50 mph. The wind is calmer now, but they are predicting a low of 29 tonight
I have the tank heaters on and a ceramic heater running overnight.
Typical Texas weather.

Gonna be 14 tonight. Furnace keeping pace, no problems. I have insulation on the windows and two blankets on the bed. Snug and comfy.
At Cumberland Gap National Historic Park.

Hi
There are pipes that run under the floor of the trailer. At some combination of temperature and time they will indeed freeze. Things like the inlet pressure regulator (if your trailer has one) are vulnerable to this as well.
One interesting thing to watch is the real temperature at the location you are in. The local weather station may not be in the same setting you are in. I have seen 5 degree differences between "my campsite" and the local report in terms of the low. ( = they reported 5 degrees below what I got to).
Since the pipes are *under* the trailer, wind makes a difference. If you pulled into the campsite on a normal fall day, the ground is not frozen. It will keep things warm. (in the spring ... maybe not ...). Running the trailer at 40 inside heats the floor less than having it at 80.
All of this stuff makes it tough to guess just what a "don't go there" temperature actually is.
