Costco for tires ?
I use costco for tires on my passenger car and appreciate the free tire rotation, repair of puncture, and generally good price and service. I’m now in need of new tires for 2012 AI but can’t seem to find a costco that can sell and install on my 2012 AI. I have been to 3 in So Cal region. Problem is it won’t fit in the bay or too heavy for lift. Most wont work on a car if it can’t fit in bay. One was willing to work on it outside but then they discovered they cannot balance the wheel bc the hole is too large to fit their balancer. If anyone has had luck w Costco I’d love to hear about it.
Do you typical tire centers have better equipment, or do you go to Freightliner shop? I’m trying to avoid the Mercedes dealership.

I just went to a local RV dealer and asked them where they send RVs for tires. They use a shop that only sells truck tires. I got the Michelin Defender LTX for about the same price as COSTCO. They had a special low profile jack to fit under the rear jacking point. My fear was that they would try to jack in the wrong location, damaging the frame, but they knew what they were doing.

Too heavy for lift... it sounds like they don't know what they are doing and/or they simply do not want that kind of business. I had a situation develop on my recent trip whereby I had to have Good Sam dispatch a tire servicer to replace two of my valve stems ( thread). The gentleman they dispatched was deep in the woods, 25 miles from the nearest populated area, and he managed to lift my rig just fine.
For that matter, I managed to lift it myself the night before, using the onboard jack (I didn't want the tire rim to transfer the load to the tire rubber while I was waiting for the servicing). It's not difficult.

Sorry for confusion. What they meant was it’s too heavy to get on their electric lift, not that they can’t manually jack it. Some Costcos say they can manually jack but all work has to be done in the shop and the shop won’t fit a 23 Fter. And then there’s the tire balancing issue.
When I had the flat changed by a tow service, they couldn’t find the jack point bc the Sprinter manual indicated a point which is covered by one of the tanks. They jacked on the rear axel by tire which I have subsequently discovered is a no-no according to some. Changing the flat by a pro was an hour plus ordeal bc everything abt the manual was wrong including where the release screws are for the spare. Some day I will do a post on that so others won’t suffer the same delays.

Did they get to the jack point? The AAA service said the jack point on rear right was covered by a tank. He jacked on the axel which I’ve subsequently heard can be bad.

I was able to have my Costco located in NE Portland Airport Way to do the install. They had the Michelin 1 cent install plus $70 off deal so my total bill comes to $1058 for all 6 tires. My sense is the shop equipment AND the manager experience with the Sprinter dually rear wheels are big factors if they can do the job.

I also use Costco for my car and truck tires. I'm replacing tires this winter and will stay with Goodyear Endurance. Costco can special order these but if I had a failure somewhere on the road I could be stuck for days for Costco to order a new one. And even then, I would have to remove the tire/wheel myself since they aren't set up for trailers. I will go with Discount or another dealer that has shops and service around the country.

I would avoid Freightliner and the Mercedes dealership. Shop around for a tire store that does only tires. A specialty shop. They are the pros. Some will have a bay tall enough and others will not.

I also highly recommend the Michelin Defenders. After we finally wore out the stock Vancos, we switched to these and we love love LOVE them.

If you want Michelins, Costco has 514 stores in 44 states. Discount tire has 900 stores in 31 states. My experience is that Discount Tire has way more experience with trailers and RV's.

Sorry I spoke prematurely, just confirmed with Costco tire manager that they will not install on any RV with water tanks, but can mount and balance tires on wheels if you bring them in :-(

Air99 - thanks for the info. Fyi they might change their tune abt balancing after they’ve actually seen the wheel. This was my experience w Costco Carlsbad and I would guess all Costcos have the same balancing equipment.
I have yet to find a Costco that can/will do the balancing and install.

This is a case by case basis. I had six tires replaced at the local Costco and printed the Sprinter jacking point information sheet for the tech with no problems.

I have had Discount/Americas tire replace old Michelins with new and after having problems with my OEM steel wheels purchased stronger better looking aluminum rims from Americas Tires. Same company (Americas Tire and Discount Tire) depends which State you are in when needing tires. Las Vegas has 2 or 3 Americas Tire, just had new tires put on my toad (smart car). Better prices than Costco and staff attitude is waaay better. AEW

Thanks for your message. I finally found a Costco in Tustin that was willing to service the AI. They will have to do it outside but are willing. Claim to have done plenty of Sprinters. Have an appointment tomorrow so will see... as someone said it seems to be case by case.
