CB Installation

We're leaving at the end of the month on a caravan to Big Bend, along with 20 other Airstreams. CB radio is required for participants.

I have a Cobra CB that I used in my pickup when I pulled the Classic 28 and a magnetic antenna. The Cobra has everything in the hand-held head except for a small metal box where the antenna and power attach. In the truck, I had the box mounted in the console and the head hanging on the center dash. One thing I learned was that it is better to have the head to the left of the driver since handling the head right handed tended to accidentally push buttons or change the volume. It is really designed for left-hand use.

My thought was to place the small box under the flap at the left-hand base of the driver's seat where I can hook into the wires to the outlet for power. I would run the antenna cable back and place a through-glass antenna on the side window behind the driver. I don't need much range since we will be traveling in groups of 4 within sight of each other.

I would welcome any advice from others who have installed CBs in their AI.

I would consider a different antenna, to get any range the antenna needs to be above the roof line. The van will act as a ground plane for the antenna and will block most of the 3.5 watts you will be using. For a temporary setup the magnetic mount on top will be a better option.
Just my opinion.
What club or chapter are you going with? It will be a great trip into the big bend, know you will enjoy.

I would second not going with the window antenna. I tried one and it whipped around when going down the road! The magnet antenna is the way to go until your decided what you want to do permanently.
