Burning smell
Okay
Left house
Drove 10 miles
Burning smell underneath hood
Passenger side
Pulled over to eat dinner
And give whatever it is a chance to cool down.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Electrical smell?
Rubber smell?
Oil smell?
Organic smell?

Any other symptoms? Electrical circuits not working? Any recent repairs? Here's a wild one, parked where squirrels can wreak havoc on chewables? Don't laugh, it happened to my car twice. Any visible smoke when it occurred?

I own 3 diesels, 10 miles or so driving I could almost put a bare hand on the engine, barely hot. Unlikely IMHO to be hot enough to be source.

I had a plastic bag get stuck on a catalytic convertor once and it smell 'til it was completely consumed. Might check underneath for something like that.

Just thinking out loud here, could it have something to do with the DPF (diesel particulate filter) regen? Not sure under what circumstances it runs (I would think it would only do it on the highway) but I know it is supposed to get super hot.

I don't know what you are driving, but if it is a late model diesel it is likely doing the regeneration cycle. I can occasionally smell my truck, and the exhaust runs down the passenger side

I get the smell sometimes while driving my Interstate. Not burning, exactly, more like a "scorched coffeepot" sort of smell. Disconcerting the first time, but it goes away all on its own every time, so the regeneration cycle idea is my take as well.
