BBQ Options?
Hello Interstate Owners,
We have a 2011 Interstate and are looking to pickup a compact BBQ that connects via the exterior LP gas outlet. I understand this is a "low flow" outlet and I am wondering you have found to work the best?
Thanks

Good question. I tried hooking the external gas valve up to a small portable Charbroil gas grill and I couldn't keep it lit. It was like it was not getting a constant or consistent flow. I was going to take it to a propane shop to have them check it out. The overflow valve hose was clogged up with some debris they cleaned out when I first got my unit but I never used the grill before or tested that hose.

While do not have an Avion, I can share a "tidbit". The low pressure connection needs to be matched with the correct regulator on the grill. My personal experience with using an 8lb tank and original regulator vs the low pressure hose and matching regulator from my grill manufacturer is that the heat or btu output is significantly less. This may be unique to my grill. Other members may tell you which grill they use with that connection that perform better.
In my case the grill I have is way too hot even on its lowest setting, therefore, the lower pressure setup is working well for me.....right now anyway!
There was a recent thread on this subject, you may find useful. You'd need to dig for it..

Camco Olympian 5500
I added a low pressure outlet to my Safari and use it with a Camco Olympian 5500 grill. I found it on a good sale, otherwise they are pretty expensive. It is designed to work directly off a low pressure feed and does not need an additional regulator.
There are several versions with the same name/number. Mine came with a combination stand/hanger frame. It sits on a small table or will hang from an accessory rail ($6) screwed or riveted to the side of the RV.
I had to adjust mine down because it was too hot, even on low. Screwdriver adjustment under the knob.

Side stepping the language nit pickers... you'll discover the number of choices for a low pressure, portable grill is limited. However, the high pressure units with a regulator are easily modified. You simply have to remove the grill's regulator and connect a hose (it is usually a 1/8" threaded coupler on the grill end, there are other sizes tho) with a quick connect that matches your outlet on the other end. Hoses come in variable lengths: upwards to 15' in length. Two regulators equal trouble, the grill's flame size valve is sufficient to control the burner just like your stove top.
You can also insert a T between the grill's regulator and grill so dual use is enabled for those times your grill is used without the Interstate and off a small tank.
Here is the kind of thing you'll need:

If messing with the conversion concerns you, here is an alternative:

+1 for the Olympian 5500. It is one of the few grills available that will work with the LP gas quick disconnect on the Interstate. That connector is for regulated low pressure LP. Many portable grills have there own regulators and must be connected to high pressure LP.
Here are a few photos of mine using the Camco grill mounting rail.
Enjoy,

The outside LP-out quick connect on an AS is regulated at 1/2 lbs. It takes 10 lbs to operate a grill regulator therefore you have to purchase an RV type unregulated grill or purchase what you want and remove the regulator. I modified a Cuisinart by removing the regulator and inserting a Camco male low-pressure quick connect in the grill's flame adjustment valve where the regulator was removed from and purchased a Camco 10' male/female low-pressure hose to connect it to the AS. Works great and not difficult to do.

First, what is the origin of your handle?
Second, I can't tell from your picture but is your mounting rail that is attached to the Interstate silver or white? Mine is white and I'm trying to figure out how to get it stripped and anodized so it will be silver.
Thanks,
Al

My handle was a whim from when I once owned a 1971 Porsche 914/6.
The mounting rail started white, but I painted silver to closer match my van. Its been there for two years now and still looks great. I think anodizing it is not necessary.

Bet you wish you still had it? See attached PDF file.
I had a 1970 914-6 back in the '80's. Fun car to drive.

We opted to get the Weber Q-Grill (gas). It utilizes the small gas cylinders. We wanted the option of having the grill detached from the coach and not using the on-board propane. Having the flexibility to use the grill on a picnic table or small grill table away from the coach was a consideration. I was not comfortable having the grill mounted to the side of the vehicle. Heat and normal grill flare-ups could potentially damage the vehicle paint was my thought. Mount brackets screwed into the side of the vehicle could also be a source of rust in the long run.

I have a coleman raodtrip grill... I like that it uses the little gas canisters and it grills well but it uses up too much space. I really only need something half the size

Wow at today's values - yes I wish I still had it. Mine was in the #3 category as it had a later model 911 engine. I bought it in 1997 and sold it in 2002 for what I paid for it. It was a very fun car to drive, but at some point I realized it was just an old car.

We like the O Grill. Smallest propane grill we could find, easy to store in the Interstate. Runs on the propane canisters, but we chose to remove the regulator and run off the onboard propane.
