B190 engine,460 vs V10

I plan to tow a 6000lb boat occasionally long distances, can I assume both engines will work just fine but the V10 will get slightly better fuel mileage with no load? Tim

Proably better under load as well.

A close friend just replaced his 91 Ford E350 ( 460V8) with an 04 Ford E350. (V10)
Both had the HD towing package, and the same gear ratios etc.
The V10 is hands down a much more pleasant engine than the ancient 460 V8. The 460 was an inherent oil burner, oil leaker, and fuel hog. The V10 seems to be a much more refined engine, with no problems at all so far.
His 460 had problems from day one and was replaced under warranty once, and on his dime once, and resealed several times. I drove the old van quite a bit, and found it quite underwhelming on the power side. 9-10mpg empty would be on a good day....

Both are extremely durable engines. The 460 is a proven industrial engine used for everything from running water pumps and generators to pushing motorhomes and boats. We still have a '95 model in a one ton shop truck pushing 300,000 on the original engine. I have an '03 V10 as a daily driver, it just turned 80,000 and so far no problems. Empty the V10 gets about 20% better fuel economy, towing is close to the same, maybe a shade better, but the powerband is broader. The later 460's were pretty detuned to meet emissions requirements.
