Airstream Interstate on New Mercedes Chassis Available (Model 2014.5)

Airstream has built the Interstate on the new Mercedes chassis and they are going to announce in LA. They call in model year 2014 and a half. My local dealer has one already and there are a lot of changes in this model...more than most people hypothesized.

New styling including radiator grill, fenders, front hood, bumpers, bi-xenon lamps, chrome step/license plate holder.

Bi-xenon lamps are extra bring and offer low and high beam.

New steering wheel is thicker and has new multi function design.

New Mercedes branded stick shift.

Safety features: collision prevention, blind spot assist, parktronic on all models (not just 24 foot), lane keep assist, high beam assist...calling it the safest Mercedes Sprinter ever built.

New Alcoa Dura-bright non-polish wheels - stay brighter without polishing.

Wider driver and passenger steps.

LED lit awnings.

New Marine style plank flooring - read vinyl to look like wood. It's ugly in my opinion and may prevent me from buying it.

Insulated, monogrammed privacy curtain.

New magic suede fabric throughout - more durable, improved strain resistance.

New Samsung Blu-Ray player - High def audio, Netflix, YouTube, Pandora, and Internet.

New Samsung 22 inch TVs (replacing the 19") - High def capable.

New Kenwood DD-990 infotainment center - built in wifi, voice dialing, bluetooth streaming remote controlled.

I'm excited about the changes and it definitely has me thinking about making a purchase soon. None of these are dramatic enhancements like a new floor plan, etc but nice evolutionary enhancements on the newest, safer chassis. The overall price increase is about $5K more.

Couldn't tell from the pics/video but the fuel gauge says the filler is on the curb side now. But then so does the old model.

Not sure what "micro suede" looks like but in the video the upholstery still looked the same.

The Durabright wheels and extended "usable" steps were long overdue. But they still left the rusty tailpipe sticking out. Oh well, gives one the excuse to put a nice polished st-st tip on.

Thanks for the post.

Wonder if the steps could be retrofitted to an older model, such as my 2011 Sprinter/2012 Interstate?

I suspect you would have to purchase the entire sill molding or find somebody that could cut out your old ones and cut in the new one as it is all fiberglass.

I've got something on order for my toad over at Foley RV in Gulfport. Next time I'm over there to pick up the part I ordered, I'll ask about those steps as well.

It appears that the step portion under the doors is separate from the rest of the rocker trim so one might be able to swap out the old for the new.

Here's a clearer picture of the new step. Also the diesel filler is on the driver's side.

I definitely want those steps! But not enough to trade in my 2012 on a 2014.

I just took a look at the side step on our 2014; I'm not sure I really see the difference? I have to say, I've never used the external step to get into my Interstate. I just checked with my wife, same with her; I guess we use the step within the door well once the door is opened.

The external step doesn't appear to be all that functional; more of a look that matches the rest of the AIRSTREAM installed ground effects... Not worth trading up to a 2014.5.....

The new step actually stands out far enough to usable without breaking your ankles. But I agree with you, it wouldn't be worthwhile to even add it to an older version. I also just go ahead and use the internal step when getting in.

Does anyone have a link to the Alcoa Durabright wheels for Sprinters? I can only find the existing polished Alcoa wheels for Sprinters.

the Alcoa DuraBrite wheel has had a special process done to the metal that supposedly doesn't require polishing as do the regular Alcoa wheels too.

If memory serves me, the DuraBrite wheel has a DB at the end of the stamped part number in the wheel. I got that information off of the Alcoa website couple of years ago.
