AI Passenger seat work station ideas
Any ideas on how to have a work station for the passenger seat while facing forward and driving? My wife needs to work while we are on the road. I do most of the driving. Typically this means a laptop and notepad for writing. Working in the back of the AI on the table with air ride is too "bouncy" to work for long periods of time. I keep looking at options to build some type of small work desk that might hook into the dash but nothing has come to mind.

I think having a 'desk' that sits on her lap would be best so that the desk bounces nearly in sync with her arms bouncing and her eyes seeing. I think it would be difficult to type or see with the desk somehow mounted to the chassis.

Also you may not be able to rotate the passenger seat with this device installed, unless it is a quick release, and that is just another thing to have to do before enjoying the AI

Working while in an AI road trip? Isn't there a prohibition against that?
This may do, my daughter uses at home, but may work in mobile setup? Levenger Lap Desk

Are you sure it must be facing forward? I tried that initially and could not get it to work. There’s just too much light coming in through the cab to see the computer screen, and anything I tried to reduce the glare in the vicinity of the computer impaired the driver’s curbside mirror view.
I swivel the passenger seat around and use a Lagun table which is mounted on the end of the galley. It turned out to be more comfortable than I expected. Ignore the leg you see under the right side in this pic - I got rid of that as I found it wasn’t necessary, (plus I rounded the table corners after this pic was taken - details are near the end of the Interstate Mods thread).

Do you use this backward-facing work station while the vehicle is in motion, as the OP wants to do? Most folks might find this disorienting or worse. Not being able to see the horizon, and traffic etc., could easily induce seasickness IMO.

Yes, I do, and I have no trouble with it, other than being routinely unnerved by the freeway atrocities I now witness behind us, to which I had previously been blissfully ignorant.
:-)
In the blog post that I wrote describing the table installation, I compared it to flying backwards in the old Southwest Airlines lounge seating. I used to do that all the time with no ill effects. I tried everything I could think of short of air suspension to ride in the back, but I just cannot do it. My stomach and inner ear refuse to adjust. But I’ve had no issues up front.

Thanks -- a blessing that you trust your driver that much. Not sure I could handle looking backwards, with any driver!

Be certain that whatever you put in front of the passenger air bag will not become a lethal flying object in the event of deployment.

I think that's the fly in the chardonnay with any solution for the front passenger seat, because anything on your lap becomes a potential hazard, even the laptop itself.
Things get a bit simpler with the Lounge because there is the second row of front seats available for such things.

Please remember that anything in front of the airbag may become a lethal flying object during airbag deployment.

Good point, swilly43. Has DOT approved using the rear-facing seat while the vehicle is in motion? I would guess not, and am wondering what everyone's owner's manual says.
This MB manual says the safety restraints may not work correctly unless the seat is facing forward:
http://www.royalelimo.com/attachment...ors-Manual.pdf
On p. 73 [PDF p. 75/290] in the lower right corner it specifically says this:
"If the driver's and front-passenger seats are not engaged facing the direction of travel while driving, the restraint systems may not be able to provide the intended protection. There is an increased risk of injury, possibly even fatal. Engage the driver's and front-passenger seats so they are facing the direction of travel before starting the engine."

Do your AS/MB owner's manuals discuss the rear-facing seats relative to the above?
Thanks,
Peter

Just looking at the path of the seat belt coming from the chassis column I always assumed, without reading the manual, that facing any direction other than forward leaves the passenger extremely exposed with no restraint. No different than getting up and walking around. Got to be super careful and aware of your surroundings. When she is up I slow down a few MPH, back off the guy in front a little more and no lane changes or passing.
Thanks for all the links to the lap/desk products. That is probably the way to go.
And yes, she needs to do a little work in the AI while on the road - a few hours a day. So do I but not while driving. Otherwise we would never leave the driveway. Compromises...….

Glad to hear. But if you change your mind and decide to multiplex and work & drive at same time, go buy this Now, I realize this was not meant for use during driving, but you know someone will

I have seen people reading books, eating cereal (bowl, spoon, everything), reading a newspaper...etc. All this while driving down the highway at 60+ mph!!!!
So I would not be surprised someone using this while driving as well...

Wachuko let's add breast feeding to that list. On a turnpike I believe and on camera.

Tell me about it, which is why I posted that ridiculous pic. Why would anyone even design such a thing in first place?
