A/C on the fritz

2011 Airstream Interstate

On this trip, the A/C initially worked fine and then the compressor shut down (fan still worked) and the current draw from generator dropped down. After leaving off for awhile, it restarted OK and seemed to work normally except now it sounds like the fan blade is hitting something as there is a "tinkling" sound. Then it quit working again and compressor will not restart.

And to make matters worse the bath exhaust fan quit and the rear camera mirror won't turn on, just beeps when button pressed.

Any ideas? Dealer checking for a dealer near Destin, FL where we are headed. The front A/C isn't up to the task of cooling the entire RV in the 95+ temps. Wished they had put a rear A/C in them like my Tahoes.

Update: Just tried it this morning in the relative cool and it seems to work so I'm thinking it's a heat related problem. Fan noise is getting worse so I'm thinking it has loosened on the shaft and moving closer to grill.

Is it a Dometic Penguin on the Interstate? If so, you should be able to go to any Airstream dealer, and possibly any Dometic dealer, to have it repaired. You can call JD Saunders in Alachua, they are an Airstream dealer. Since it's a 2011, it is probably still under warranty. Make sure you show them the paperwork from when the motor home was purchased.
Good luck with it, July in Florida is not a fun time to be without a/c

AC are equipped with a current censer that shuts the unit down if the current is too high.

My first reaction is that happened. This can happen from just high outsider temperature, load on the unit, but can also be effected by lower voltage, as current goes up as voltage goes down.

Try and find some shade when operating that unit and make sure there is at least 110 volts available while the unit is running.

I have had to play water on the condensing coils of my unit till the load on the AC started to come down to keep this from happening

Thanks for the info. Wasn't aware of the current sensor but that sounds like what it might be.

Good idea about the water on the condensor as that would lower the pressure but hard to effect going down the hwy.

Will give Jim at Airstream a call also.

Thanks again.

It's currently in the shop w/ a list of 15 things to fix. Will post what the various resolutions are when I get it back.

Funny thing was by the time we got home it wouldn't run more than about a minute on the genset but worked fine on shore power.

I did learn from Jim how to fix the blinds when they won't stay in position. It is controlled by the tension on the strings. To tighten, loosen the screw at the bottom in the plastic doohickey, pull the string tighter, and re-tighten the screw.

The rooftop air conditioner on a late-model Interstate is made by Carrier. I forget the exact model, though.

I guess 2012 was the first year for the Carrier unit, then. Good to know for next time someone asks.

I have a 2005 Westi, which needs a compressor. Not available from Germany, no longer being made. Can this units be taken out and replaced with any of the USA AC units, and by whom?
Local dealer says no can do.

Thanks

Replacing the compressor should be a simple plumbing job that any good AC shop should be able to do. If you do have it done make sure that who ever does it addresses the cap tube to make sure it is clear and will remain clear after restart. If the compressor is bad it may have sent dirt out and that could clog the cap tube.

He would say that. He wouldn't want to take responsibility if it doesn't work, and their shop manuals are all about how to fix it back the way it was, not modify it.

I looked up the online 2005 Airstream/Westfalia parts catalog. Airstream part number 900001526979 is a Seltec TM15PV/8 compressor. Is that the kind of compressor you're needing?

If Airstream doesn't stock them anymore, you could try a source like this one: Seltec Compressors. If this source doesn't pan out, you can always Google "seltec compressor" to find others.

Even though Westfalias aren't made anymore, Seltec parts are found in many different AC units. Then when you get the right part, you can take it to any AC repair shop as HowieE suggests.

Repair teck now says it needs Freon recharge but he can't find the recharge port.

Any thoughts.

Can you recommend a place in new England that I can get this serviced before we leave for the west coast in Dec.

Thanks

Unless the unit has been recharged after manufacturing it will not have a recharging port. Any TECK that does not know that you need to find another tech
