2016 Interstate Owner's Manual - and what's inside!
I've just spotted the 2016 Interstate Owner's Manual on the Airstream website. And I'm totally taken aback by some of the things I see in there. For example:
It seems you can now get an Interstate in any combination of seating and bedding. I see a layout of a Grand Tour with Twin Single Beds, and a Twin Single Bed model with 4 Captain's chairs.
I see a reference to electric shades. Wonder what that is.
And - wait for it - I see a reference to an optional VB Air Suspension System!
And now my local dealer had told me I can order an Interstate on a 4x4 van! My enthusiasm has been re-awakened!

Great find! On quick review, I'm seeing a couple things pop out. First, is automatic shades...it sounds like this isn't the back screen, but true automatic shades. The second big change is the optional VB-Air suspension. I looked everywhere to try to get the air suspension added to my van, but no one would do it. I'm glad they're adding that.

Interesting note: according to the specs, both the black water and LPG tank capacities are siginificantly smaller than 2015 specs (12 gal vs. 15 gal, 14 gal vs. 18 gal)

Auto shades? Sounds interesting.
I have auto shades in my condo. They can be prone to having "issues." And they are never cheap to fix. Mind you, I have 15' ceilings, so my shades are huge.
But still, I think, in the RV, it wouldn't be worth dealing with the auto shades and motors. One more thing to break.

I wonder how much the VB suspension option costs.

Air suspension option is offered by Advanced RV for a couple of years. I believe it's in the $10k range. They also will retrofit (some) AI machines.

2016 Interstate Owner's Manual - and what's inside!
VB Air Suspension now has a significant presence in the USA. I think we will see more of their product on Sprinter and other van based RVs.

I spoke with Airstream about adding VB to my 2014.5 Airstream and they said it costs around $6K, but they would charge $10K to install. So, I think we can expect it to be a $10K upgrade like sleeptite suggested.

I too have doubts about auto-shades. Think I'd give them a couple of MY to get the bugs out.

Yup, It had fallen off the track twice already in 4 days. And upon delivery the night blind was in the sun shade's track and jammed.

Patrick at Colonial Airstream posted some good videos about new features in the 2016. I'm digging the automatic shades mostly because it looks like they are true blackout screens. The side cameras are a nice new feature. I also like how the twin beds are designed to convert to a King size bed. I ordered a lounge model and really wish I had gone for a Twin...now people can have the best of both worlds.

I have to give Airstream credit. They just keep on adding new stuff.
The shades seem nice even with the "MEGA" Remote Control and as if we didn't already have enough remotes . Hopefully they have some longevity to them.
I don't find the side cameras necessary with the mirror warning lights, but hey could probably get used to them.
I really like that the new rear view monitor is a solid mount rather than being clipped onto the old rear view mirror. Not sure who thought that was a good idea?

Too many remotes and too large a TV to suit me , but I do like the wardrobes and the wet bath.
No sink in ours, toilet paper is recessed into the little medicine cabinet over th toilet, and no swing out mirror.
Doesn't make me want a new one , but this does look efficient and space-economical.

The lights underneath the chassis are impressive at night. Very white and matches the awning LED.

That would be a bad thing on my 2012 Interstate. The "patio" light is way too dim to even use as a night-light— it's the dimmest LED in the entire van— so all it's good for is to tell people whether I'm there or away (as in, "I'll leave the porch light on for you.") I trust newer models actually have a usable patio light?

With the awning light, patio light and chassis light it seems to be adequate lighting. Although, I haven't tried it outside of our driveway.
