IPS Technical Service Bulletin

The dealer's copy machine's printer cartridge was running low so the PDF quality isn't very good. But here's the link to the January 2014 IPS Technical Service Bulletin regarding Airstream and Lifeline AGM batteries.

Hi all, I am new to RV'ing and new to Airstream. We have a new 2014 Interstate that we received on 12/18/13. I am told now by a repair shop that the batteries need replacing. We have kept it connected to the house (120v) almost constantly and the repair shops are telling me they have as well. Does anyone have best practices to keep these batteries working? We don't turn off the load because the RV has not been left idle many days in a row.

Thanks for the help,
Rhonda

Welcome to Air Forums.

It sounds like the RV sat on the dealers lot and for some reason the solar panel didn't keep the batteries charged properly.

Personally I turn everything off in mine and let the solar keep the chassis and house batteries charged.

Read the posts in this thread and you may be able to get the dealer to replace the batteries.

Rhonda, See my recent post concerning the Lifeline battery technical bulletin with a link to the PDF. Your batteries most likely were not attended to properly while your interstate sat on the dealer's lot and were in need of replacing when you drove it home. Our dealer and others around the country have replaced the batteries at no cost because Lifeline made it clear to AS dead batteries upon delivery or shortly thereafter is not a manufacturer problem. As an aside, during a recent visit to a dealer I noticed that the batteries on the Interstate showroom model were either toast or had been removed from the coach. Good luck.

Thank you gentlemen and thanks Jkinglet for the post. My favorite is that it is dated January '14 while the warranty department is stating notification was included in the RV 12/13. Anyway, the RV came straight from Ohio and arrived 12/16/13. Could it have sat in Ohio? Is it possible It corroded because I connected to 120v vs 30 amp? I definitely will be turning everything off from here on out.

Thanks again,
Rhonda

Having the shore power plugged in would not hurt anything. In fact, it should maintain all of the batteries. Your shore power if connected to your home circuits would most likely be either a 20 amp or 15 amp circuit which is adequate for everything except for the A/C if on a 15 amp circuit.

When I said turn everything off, that includes all of the circuit breakers, inverter, house battery disconnect, and antenna amplifier. About the only thing drawing current then is the BIM (Battery Isolation Monitor). The solar should be able to maintain the batteries then.

Did you look in the Airstream manual, section H about electrical? Its also available on the Airstream webpage to download. Its about 1.3meg PDF file.

I've attached two smaller files that give you more details on some of the systems in the AI.
Attached Files
File Type: pdf 0010021000BatteryIsolationManagerRevD.pdf (77.4 KB, 29 views)
File Type: pdf 0010024000PowerControlSystemMiniC.pdf (164.2 KB, 26 views)

If you are getting a fault on the inverter remote panel, you more than likely have to re-set the inverter. It should be under your rear bench seat, bolted to the rear vertical wall. Remove the outer screws and lower the panel so you see the inverter. The cables should enter the inverter on the driver side of the unit.

There is a small button just above the green LED light on this side of the inverter. Push the button and hold until the LED starts flashing rapidly. This is a 'soft' reset.

If you still have a fault code, you need a 'hard' reset, which means removing all AC and DC power from the inverter along with any communication cables (look like phone cables) for 10 minutes..... then re-connect all. If that does not reset the inverter, you need to have a factory authorized Magnum service center look at it, as you might have a more serious problem.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
