A few months ago I looked out one of the side bedroom windows of my house to see the trailer. I saw what I thought was a long black hose hanging off the tongue and resting partially on the ground. I had no idea what it was or why it was there, as I knew the propane lines were not there. I feared someone had cut them and tossed them on the front of the A frame. Just as I was about to head outside to check it out, it slithered away.
Today, I am working on the trailer, mostly on the outside in the area of the battery and storage access panels. I take a moment to go to the garage for some tools, and when I come back, a black snake that was a good 1-1/2" in diameter slides right through my tools laying on the ground and under the trailer, and disappears. Scared the you know what out of me.
I haven't seen any signs of him inside the trailer. This may explain why I have never had any rodents of any kind in the trailer. Black snakes are generally harmless to humans, unless you antagonize them, and they keep the rodent population down. I'm wondering if he is up in the belly pan.
I'm thinking of giving him a name.

We had a snake incident in Baja once, and it was scary as well. I remember seeing a program on a deadly snake on Animal Planet once, and it was a Black Mamba. You might check your snake reference on this "harmless black snake" of yours. Also, if there is one, there might be more. Especially if there are NO rodents. I heard snakes don't eat that much.....
Definetly check out your new tenant, he might be venemous or looking for a place to lay it's eggs...
Some species of snakes will look for a warm, dark secluded area where to lay their eggs and then just abandon them there. A few weeks/months later they hatch and you may find yourself with a much larger problem! By the way some snakes lay hundreds of eggs!!
If so, there is a limited number of snake brands to worry about. You've got rattlers, cottonmouth (water mocasin), coral (red and yellow...), and copperhead (see http://www.pestproducts.com/snake_pictures.htm )
unless you have neighbors with strange pets who got loose.
Other than the poisonous types the main worry is infection from snake bite.
But most snakes aren't too interested in chasing you if you give them a bit of respect.
And they do keep mice and other rodents and some other pests under control, even if they don't eat that much.
I don't think a snake would be very interested in taking up habitation inside the RV unless you had a nice warm spot or something. Most likely has a hole in the ground under the RV parking spot.
I'm familiar with this particular snake. He is definitely a black racer. Harmless to humans unless you step on him. Non posionous. Here in FL, we are used to the deadly ones. When my son was little, he was out at the pool and picked up his Ninja Turtle kickboard. Coiled up underneath was a Pygmy Rattler. Very common here. Deadly too for such a small snake. One of my neighbors was rushed to the hospital after having just brushed up against one in his pool. Didn't even get bit, just came in contact with the venom. Was in the hospital for a week.
Florida is a bizarre place for wildlife and natural disasters. We have poisonous snakes everywhere, alligators, vultures, wild boar running wild, hurricanes, tornados, water spouts, sharks, barracudas, every creepy crawly thing you can imagine, and the thing that scares me most are the two legged creatures!

Yes, I did forget about the lightning. Beautiful, but deadly! Lost many a computer and electronic appliance from it.
Tampa is a young town. I believe the average age is late 30's to mid 40's. Now go over to St. Petersburg, and that almost doubles. I like it here and don't miss the Northeast winters! Plus, you can camp all year long, and don't have to winterize!
If you need some help convincing your wife, just let me know!

Hi Sneakinup,
I'm sure I posted this b4, but 2 keep it short...Whilst on our '02 visit 2 FL:, my Son Mark & I would take a walk around the villa complex we were stayin at, one evening as we done " our rounds " a BLACK snake of abt a foot was in the road, we were, I guess a little close 2 it, when a huge Guy pulls up in his P/U...as we were blocking the road, he got out an yelled " Git outa there...God damn it...", nice Guy...however he took out a pole from his truck an moved the snake quite a distance away down near the waters edge...I asked him what kind of snake it was...his reply was..." It's a SNAKE..a God darn snake...now leave 'em alone.."...and drove off....Still none the wiser !!!..." A snake is jus a snake...a car is jus a car...but a AIRSTREAM is something totaly DIFFERENT...I THINK !!! ?.
Anyone kn what type it was...or was it jus a " God darn snake..."lol...Chris.....

We have a black snake who helped her/himself to all the koi in my pond about 4 ft long. The bigger koi .it would bite on their sides, and try to eat them. Instead they died from trauma. It actually dragged my silver one foot koi out of the water where it died. Luckily I had raised the koi from babies so the money loss wasnt great, but I was attached to them, and hate that jump one gets from seeing a snake out of the corner of the eye. Yesterday I ran out to feed a new batch of little goldfish (to eat mosquito larvae) and there was a shed snake skin almost 5 feet long. Apparently the rocks between 2 pools is perfect for rubbing old skin off. AARGH! The best thing about it, is it wants to get away from me faster than I want to get away from it. silver suz
