Moose

Last week we lost our Moose.
She was 8 1/2 years old, and a rescue mutt.
Some strange mix of Great Dane, American Stafford they thought, but who knew or cared.
She was rescued by my Girlfriends Daughter, who named her Moose, because simply, she was the color of "Moosetracks Icecream".

She was an amazing dog. Full of life, from the moment she woke up every day she was energized and did the same for us. No Lizard, Bunny, shadow, or reflection was safe from her attention. We knew when the mailman was here, and he loved her too. Everyone did, although she could be imposing if you didnt know her. She could hear me in my truck or Diesel Mercedes 2 blocks away.
She passed after emergency surgery to correct a twisted stomach(Bloat).
We believe it was her way. Full speed, or nothing. The idea that she would age, slow down, or suffer an illness, was never in her plan.

Our lives were enriched, and full of her love, and antics, as were all of our family, friends and acquaintances.
Life will NEVER be the same without you sweetheart, and you will be forever in our hearts.

Moose

It's one of the hardest things to deal with. Sympathy and prayers your way...

We have always had rescues. They are amazing.

Steve, sorry to hear about Moose. I believe I remember seeing pictures of her in various threads here on Airforums. In that way at least she will live on...

Key air, I am so sorry for your loss. Such a great looking pup! She looked full of energy. All of our pets...dogs or cats...come from Dumb friends league. When we bring one home, their gratitude for a forever home is palpable...after they have been home for a while...and realize...."This is my real family"! No pet is more lovable and loyal.
May your fond memories sustain you through your grief.

So true, so true. And, when you feel a little better, please seriously consider rescuing another pup. I can't be complete without a few furry critters on my lap.

My sympathy for you and your family. Moose looked like a real character and a lot of spirit to go with it. Take care.

Thanks everyone.
Moose would have loved you all too...
She had a big tongue, and when she was tired, she was always like this...

Here is another pic of her I love..

We do have another Dog, called Cole, who is a Black Lab/Pitt mix, who is a sweet soul...
He is 6, and wonderful with people and smaller dogs, but can be tweaky with other dogs, especially bigger males.
I would value any insight or opinion on how to help him thru the loss too?

We got Cole from a shelter, as he had been used as "Puppy Pitt Bait", and was pretty torn up.
Moose took to him immediately and I want to share some pics of them thru the last few years, as I think you all will enjoy them.
This was them teh first weekend together in 2009.

He eventually grew into his head luckily...

Cole has grown into a handsome dog, and we love him too.

Key air, I love those photos of Moose and Cole together. Get a new pup for Cole, so he can train his new buddy to appreciate a forever family!

Thanks everyone.

We are empty nesters, and the dogs get a lot of attention... they encourage us to walk and get out, so we have lots of love to give.

Once we get on top of the grief, we plan to give another rescue a forever home.
Our bigger concern is Cole.
He is a people lovey, and very sweet, he likes little dogs, and has a sweet spot for Lab's, but does not like puppies, or Boxer's or Shepard's..
We have some work to do with him...

After losing many dogs through the years that always had siblings... dogs definitely grieve the loss of their furry brothers and sisters... sometimes very deeply. its our experience that the grief is virtually gone when a new pup joins the family...

Well, its been a month now.
We got her ashes back, so she is home, and they did a wonderful job.
A lovely classy Ceder box, a ceramic paw print, and a certificate to say it was her.
We took the pictures we had, and put them on a shelf at the top of our staircase, with her ashes, collar and leash.

Our Insurance (Pet's Best), were wonderful and caring, and got us a check for the surgery quickly, and even covered the Cremation.

It's been hard.
Walking just Cole around our neighborhood, people just ask where is Moose. The mailman cried, the neighbors cried, she was just that known and loved.

Some odd things...
I woke one night to her soft woof, and realized it was not her...

We also had a really odd moment with Cole.
He went to the Toybox, took out a ball, and took it upstairs... I passed him by, and he looked at me, tossed the ball in the air, laid down, and looked up at the place we setup her ashes and pics. I am sure he was inviting her to play. I called my GF up, and he did it again... we both broke down.

Cole has been good... he seems to have relaxed into the lower energy dog he wants to be without her constant stimulation, and he sleeps a lot.

He is eating fine, and enjoys our walks as normal, but I notice he seems to be craving both people and dog attention.

We bought him a kiddy pool today, and he had fun splashing about in it!
