Late on condolences but they are sincere nonetheless and we are glad you decided to secure another family member. We too lost a love unexpectedly at seven while we were all in Nova Scotia. Four hours and gone. I started doing tons or research on Cancer and Auto-Immune diseases in dogs. It's staggering and it is my believe the increase is related to the food we all feed our pets as well as what we put on our lawns. Most food companies have been taken over by conglomerates and production cost per bag is key to their survival. I've found a totally natural food, with probiotics, vitamins added etc which we now feed our two Labs and they seem to thrive on it.
Check out dog ratings on the internet, one of the things we looked for first was recalls-if the food had ever been recalled we crossed it off the list and almost all the "good" foods, well know foods have been recalled. There are a few which have never been recalled. I will not publish here, but anyone can PM me for what information we have gathered and what we are using if you like.
Puppy Mills are actually growing in the US and the Amish clans are some of the worst offenders. Especially those in PA and OH. If not rescuing a dog (My wife and I helped start a rescue and volunteer there now) they buy from a breeder. If the breeder refuses to let you visit their facility, refuses to let you see Mom and Dad, refuses to give you a tour - walk away.
Enjoy Mishka, Goldens are a special breed and she is a lucky girl to have "parents" like yourselves.
