Help! Crossing to Canada with Dogs? What do they need?

Hi,

I apologize if this is posted elsewhere. I've done a search but I'm short on time. We leave tomorrow.
I will be traveling to Canada and back to the US with dogs next week. I was under the impression that all I need is a signed copy of their rabies certificate from the vet. Now I'm hearing that I could be turned away without a current health certificate for Canada from my vet.
I can't find any information about it online other than the rabies and some dog food restrictions.
If anyone has crossed into Canada recently I'm looking for some information. Please let me know what as required of you for your pet. I'd hate to get turned around!
Thank you in advance,
2Alaska

Hello... We cross the border all the time ... Must have is the rabies vaccination . We have never been asked to produce these but have in hand with passports. As the certificates of health... best to give Canadian Customs as call. We have never been asked for these.

Thanks! That gives me a little peace of mind. I did call and got quite the run around before the guy said that the rabies should be enough. I must have called and been transferred 7 or 8 times. Crazy. The guy that did answer me was confused by the call and said that "a lot of people must be on vacation" if I was given his number.

I kind of freaked out when my vet said I needed to have all this other stuff. I'll stick with the rabies and hope it works out.

Thanks for the quick reply. Now I can get back to packing.

Pet Health Certificate...

Hi 2Alaska,

In my experience the ‘Health Certificate’ is only required if you are getting on a plane. The carrier wants to be ensured that the/your pet(s) is(are) healthy and relies on the vet services for this letter.

The normal 'Rabies Certificate' is good when crossing at various boarder crossings.

Have a great time in your travels throughout Canada.

Hi--we only needed current rabies when we crossed with our dogs. They were much more concerned if we had meat or potatoes! Have a wonderful trip.

Thanks Chris,

That's what I thought after looking it up but my vet thought otherwise. Thanks for posting! We will enjoy our travels in Canada.
