GPS Dog Tracker

Anyone use one of these?

Technology has advanced to the point where it's feasible to attach a GPS and a cell phone to a dogs neck and track him every where he goes. We live in wonderful times.

There are several options out there, but given my concern is at the Ranch, and being that Verizon has the best cellphone coverage there, it made my decision easy. The Whistle 3. I read an Engadget review and one from Nerd Techy So I pulled the trigger tonite. We'll see how it goes when it gets here.

I've been using a Whistle tracker for a little over a year. It's getting where the battery doesn't last very long, so I need to call their tech support, but it's been good most of the time. When my dog gets out of her "whistle zone" it gives me the address where she was when they pinged the tracker. It is very accurate in its locations.

It will go into a full track mode, but that uses battery power much faster, so you'd need to get close to a lost dog before going to that mode. Fortunately I haven't needed it.

Overall, I've been happy.

Just got it in today. Will be testing it at the ranch tomorrow. So far I'm liking it a lot.

As expected, it doesn't work that well in the RV park. AT&T reception is poor, so the GPS doesn't communicate reliably, and I can't even use my phone to track Max. Sigh.

Thanks for reporting on it. I was wondering how well those worked. I've never lost a dog yet, but it would be nice to have if we did!

I've been delaying buying one. Until they go satellite, or we have better cell coverage it doesn't make sense. The most likely places I think the dogs would go off too far is when hiking in the wilderness areas or state parks. Those areas usually are very hilly and have poor signal.
