Dog ate my meds

My wife left my two pills out on the counter for me on a small napkin, a little breeze blew them on the floor.

I walked in to take them and saw a red one on the floor but not the other, I started searching no luck.

Our 5lb Long hair Chihuahua "Trouper" was more than likely the victim.

I knew we had to empty his stomach quickly. (Total time was less than 15 minutes)I had my Vets (long time personal friend)cell with me he recommended the following.

So I just wanted to pass this along for those of you with pets.

A teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide will usually get a dog to vomit. It was about a minute and his stomach was empty.

We took him to a local vet and she gave him some charcoal mixed in water to help detox his gut. Also a meds to coat his GI trac.

All is well!

PS: If you have a larger dog the method is as follows.

I Teaspoon every 3 minutes up to a Maximum of 5 may be needed.


A note of caution, blood pressure and certain diabetic meds will stop the heart of your dog!!!

My pill was not one of those.

One of my dogs got into a prescription bottle. Probably just chewed up the bottle but a few capsules were crushed. Called my vet and poison control who told me the same thing, hydogen peroxide. They did not give me a dosage just administer peroxide until the dog pukes. It was easier taking a syringe and squirting it in towards the throat. A 2 person job. I was surprised poison control knew about the effects on pets too. With this particular medicine 2 mg worth of a 5 mg capsule could cause kidney failure.

PS Judy is fine, still chewing up my stuff.

Lucky you noticed the missing pill. I am glad things worked out well. We almost lost out 85 pound Yellow Lab when she ingested a poisonous plant (Sago Palm). She spent 4 days in intensive care, but pulled through.

The ASPCA has a 24 hour hotline for poison control. We have the number on a refrigerator magnet, just in case.

Yea, he is on the step looking for a Great Dane to walk by. Glad Trouper is OK and ready to go.

I just thought it was good for all to know, when you can't check with a vet at times.

The active ingredient in D Con is a blood thinner. Causes Mickey to bleed to death internally. This same drug is used in humans as a cardiac med. A dog would have to eat lots of this stuff to be seriously poisoned. It is dyed green so that if a non rodent type ingests it, it's mouth will be green so you will know it was actually eaten.

Just spoke to my Vet, he said induced vomiting is not done if the pet ingests petroleum based product, such as gas, oil, liter fluid.

A lot of critters, and kids too, die from auto antifreeze. Tastes sweet and looks like Kool-Aid.

Our first Wirehair Fox Terrier was a bit of a jumper/climber. He had gone into our son's room and gotten on top of his chest of drawers and eaten about 1/2 pound of chocolate covered raisins that our son had squirreled away. My wife called our vet and she said to use hydrogen peroxide to get him to expel the chocolate. It worked.

We once had a idiot neighbor who put out anti-freeze to get rid of a stray dog, of course the other neighbors dog drank it, the cure was vodka. The vet had to get the dog drunk to have the kidneys expel the anti-freeze. I believe the newer anti-freeze blends are produced with a foul taste to discourage animal’s form drinking it or licking up the puddles.

We carry hydrogen peroxide and a bottle of activated charcoal mix with us everywhere we go. The dosages will vary based on weight.

Folks who travel with pets should make an appropriate pet first aid kit, customized for your dogs medical history, weight, etc.

This thread brings back memories . . .

About 10 years ago I was exhibiting our dog in championship shows. I made arrangements to travel from Ottawa ON to Niagara Falls NY for a weekend of dog shows. To keep costs down, I had a paying passenger who was showing a standard poodle. The passenger was a "nightmare" - she had left her purse open and my dog (hers was crated) got into her purse; there were Tylenol tablets strewn about. We put in an emergency call to her vet and they arranged for us to stop at a nearby vet clinic to evacuate Stormy's stomach. This was done by squiting hydrogen peroxide into his mouth, and he did vomit up the contents of his stomach - no pills.

We got to Niagara Falls and checked into the motel. The following morning, I fed Stormy and took him outside, where he promptly vomited up a huge amount, all brown in colour. By this time I, as the breeder/owner/handler was a basket case. I then saw that while I was driving the van, Stormy had managed to open the flap on my document case and got into a bag of chocolate-covered jujubes. He ate about a pound (for a Standard Dachshund, that's quite a bit).

He felt fine, but I was a wreck. This had to be one of the worst show weekends for me.

I knew of a fellow who inadvertently took his dogs seizure medication for a week or so.
