This thread brings back memories . . .

About 10 years ago I was exhibiting our dog in championship shows. I made arrangements to travel from Ottawa ON to Niagara Falls NY for a weekend of dog shows. To keep costs down, I had a paying passenger who was showing a standard poodle. The passenger was a "nightmare" - she had left her purse open and my dog (hers was crated) got into her purse; there were Tylenol tablets strewn about. We put in an emergency call to her vet and they arranged for us to stop at a nearby vet clinic to evacuate Stormy's stomach. This was done by squiting hydrogen peroxide into his mouth, and he did vomit up the contents of his stomach - no pills.

We got to Niagara Falls and checked into the motel. The following morning, I fed Stormy and took him outside, where he promptly vomited up a huge amount, all brown in colour. By this time I, as the breeder/owner/handler was a basket case. I then saw that while I was driving the van, Stormy had managed to open the flap on my document case and got into a bag of chocolate-covered jujubes. He ate about a pound (for a Standard Dachshund, that's quite a bit).

He felt fine, but I was a wreck. This had to be one of the worst show weekends for me.

Howard

Don't you have to start at the other end for that one though?

It works the other way too.
I knew of a fellow who inadvertently took his dogs seizure medication for a week or so.

My Labrador once gobbled down a bunch of rat poison while we were exploring an empty duck hunting lodge. I was able to rush her to a vet in time to incuce vomiting, and she is still alive today. The vet said I could have used hydrogen peroxide. Those dogs do get into trouble!

the reverse to "the dog ate my meds"

The reverse to the dog ate my meds... "man eats dog meds"... can have very dramatic results. We have a friend in Cleveland who had a dog that suffered from very divergent behavior. The dog was a very assertive Alpha male that on occasion I believe was also bi-polar. This dog needed doggy tranks. He needed them frequently and in high doses.

Our friend was driving on the interstate and had a headache. He reached into his pocket, opend the bottle, and took two tablets with his coffee. Shortly thereafter he began to feel euphoric, sought and found a rest area.
He was able to get off the road successfully. When he woke up an hour or so later, he found that he had voided himself in the front seat and had hallucinated very pretty dreams.

He was a changed man that day and he changed the treatment for his dog.

Traveling with dogs always makes the trip more interesting!

As we have 4 dogs- we have found that a complete dog first aid kit, activated charcoal, and hydrogen peroxide is a must. Our yellow lab/pit mix ate a whole box of de-con once (we found her licking it clean) the vet said "pour a bottle of hydrogen peroxide down her throat until she vomits". She vomited bright green all over the yard and we had to give her vitamin K pills for 3 weeks- but she was fine. My husband couldn't resist asking the vet about putting her on anti-depressants- after all she did try to commit suicide.

Great thread -

But - I can't help but wonder after reading about all the Labs in trouble - is it Airstreamers who are more likely to own a Lab or Lab mix? Or is it the Labs who are more likely to ingest stuff they shouldn't??

-Michelle
