De-worming for dogs

Hi!
I’m a huge animal lover and I was wondering if anyone could help me solve
my problem…
I have a dog who’s name is Elvis and a cat who’s name is Princess!
I’ve discovered that Elvis had worms, (is it possible that he got from other pets???)
so I want to my vet and he gave him a de-worming medication in a tablet form but he wouldn’t swallow it!!
I didn’t want to use too much force so I tried wrapping it with some sausage but he some how figured it out!
please help me!!
Tami

Hello Tami -- and in one of the more unusual welcomes I guess I'll say you've posted this in the right subforum. So welcome to the broader Airstream Forums! Are you an Airstream owner or yearner?

I've got a large dog who hates the awful taste of Keflex antibiotic and she gets doses every weekend. Her two 500mg capsules shouldn't be larger than what you're trying to administer. We wrap thin slices of butter around both caps. With the dog backed into a corner and sitting up tall with head pointed up at a 45 degree angle, they cannot swing their body or neck to evade you. Holding around the snout and gripping on the upper molar area with pills in the other hand, I enter her mouth and deposit the buttered pills over the back of her tongue. I'd say I get it at least as far back as the tonsillar pillars that close the throat from the side. Emphasis should be on gentle -- don't go this far if your dog is able to evade, can swing their head, or is biting. This works if the human is their alpha. I hope you don't have an aggressive breed like a chow chow...

Close the mouth shut after depositing the pill, keeping the head position up. Light stroking of the throat usually encourages a swallow.

This is an unusual request. Maybe Elvis' humans dream about Airstreams ... but again, Welcome!

If you were to give your dog the worm pill in your airstream......

Put the pill as far into your dogs mouth as possible and then massage his throat to trigger a swallowing reflex. As this is an easier process when you have three hands, you may wish to ask a friend for a help.

I use crunchy peanut butter. They can't tell if it is a pill or peanut. It can also be fun to watch them eat the peanut butter!

For the Mods...

I saw the replies about whether or not this was an appropriate post, or place for the post. I then scrolled to the top to look at the "trail" (for lack of a better term) and saw that the post was in the pet forum. Where would a person post a pet question like this, if not in the pet forum? Or did a Mod move it from another location?

Brand new Rivet Master, still figuring things out,
Dave

"...Where would a person post a pet question like this, if not in the pet forum?. . ." Thanks, Dave. I erased two responses and finally decided to reply with my thoughts, much like Dave's above. As a participating member of this forum, I've seen lots of things discussed, not always directly connected to Airstream, and as long as they are respectful written and within the forum's expectation for decency, then they are left alone, usually widely read, and found interesting by many. People always have the privilege of not opening a thread if not of their interest. Now, as to this one: I hope we have not lost a new forum member because of the posts above that seem to be rebukes. We DO have a pet subforum, and a "huge" number of us are pet lovers also, and I for one would rather have a chance to assist a pet owner who is having a problem than to make that owner feel that this is not a place where a question can be posted and a pet helped. I am remembering Insides"kitties" thread. Fun, interesting, nuttin' much to do with Airstream, and lots of participation. Now, let's lighten up a little, please, and try not to spoil the participation of a new, sincerely concerned forum member. Thanks, G

Cheese!

Wrap the pill in cheese, adios pill! Most dogs love cheese so much that they just swallow.

OK Shari,
You're a Mod - I'm still looking for an answer to my above question. Is the pet forum the proper place for a pet question? Did I miss something?
In re-reading my question, it sounds slightly confrontational, and I don't mean it that way. Just a direct question.

Tami, I really appreciate Georgia's expression of welcome. She earned karma for it and I trust our multiheaded responses help you out. But I'm dying to know -- what kind of dog do you have? And did the pill go down?

Tami placed this thread in the pet forum and I think that is most appropriate. I edited out my first cautious response and decided to "go for it" in this unique thread. Dave, I know your style from many posts and appreciate it greatly. No offense could be taken.

Oops, yes, I did mean Stefrobts. I have a Swiss cheese brain these days. Please accept my apologies to you, Shari, for the misquote. But, I do believe we need to receive these posts in a wholly welcoming manner, especially when we have a subforum designated for them. ~G

mash the pill and mix it into Evis's dinner, He won't even know it's there. Your cat should also have worm medicine.

Yes, other animals can be the source of the worms however mosqutoes(?) are the most often cause. Scold your vet as it should have told you all this

Yes, please let us know if any of these suggestions work. Dogs are as individual as children. What will work for one may not work for another!

My dog contracted tape worms and my vet said he couldn't get them from other animals, exactly. Just from a dirty kennel. He said my dog probably got them from the whelping bed. I don't know, I think he might have got them from either squirrels or Canadian Geese since he seemed to have a fondness for their poop as a pup. I know, grosses me out to think about it, but they aren't born with Emily Post manners.

I wanted to wish you a warm welcome to the forums and say I think the earlier social snafu was because yours was such a unique and unexpected first post for our little group.

I think the suggestions that have been offered are good ones, especially the one about what works for one dog doesn't always work for another. I always just open my dog's mouth by pinching between his molars (wrap my hand over the top of his muzzle) and using my thumb, push the pill deep in his throat being careful not to scrape his mouth or throat with my fingernail. Then message his throat 'till he sticks his tongue out indicating that he has swallowed.

For me, the direct approach is most effective, but then I am the alfa-male in the family.
