Be brave and open his mouth, stick it as far back as you can, close the mouth and run the neck until he swallows. If this doesn't work for you, go back to your vet and get a shot or a liquid.

You are correct. When I took my cocker in for his annual this past Saturday, I asked the vet for my own info and she said that tape worms come from flees and it was probably flees in the whelping bed or a flee that jumped on him, bit him and jumped back off outside that gave him the tape worms since I had used Front Line on him since the day I brought him in for his physical exam on the day I brought him home from the breader.
The presence of tape worms was confirmed when he was a puppy by a stool analysis in the vets office. He was diagnosed with tape worms a few weeks after I brought him home. He was house trained by then but I always cleaned up his poop in the yard because he preferred to go just off of the patio. I had noticed the small white rice like eggs (?) in his stool one day and called the vet. They wanted me to bring him is so I did. It just so happened he was displaying behavior that indicated he had to go while he was in the exam room so one of the vet techs and I went outside and he went and she retrieved with a plastic sampler device that looked like the eye of a giant plastic sewing needle. She indicated it would have been used to "go in after" a sample if he hadn't provided one for us.
They gave me a worm medicine to give him and it seems it may have been just one treatment. Since then his monthly heartworm tabs have been a chore to give him. Our other dog took HeartGuard and loved them...he thought they were treats. This one spits the Sentinel out so I have to do the thumb down the throat and rub 'till he swallows. Just remember the dog hasn't swallowed until he/she licks his/her nose.
