Crate size for cocker spaniels

If you travel with your cocker, what size crate do you use? or do you use one in the TV while traveling? We feel like our cocker would probably ride better for longer periods of time if in the crate because she tends to get restless when the car slows down in traffic. Thoughts? She is 24 inches long and top of head 20 inches.

OP, it sounds like you have not used crates before. Instead of the hassle of getting a crate your dog "fits' in but doesnt like, try to make a trip to the nearest Petsmart, Petco or the like (they let you bring you dog in) and try a couple of crates in person. Bring treats. Pay special attention to the crate dimensions, how easy they are to break down and tie down.

Two of my dogs dont mind smaller crates (I call 'em travel crates opposed to the bigger at home crates) for short periods of time - it seems to make them feel secure. The other dog is never happy about anything The smaller crates mean the dogs wont move around much in the event of a collision and they are very easy to strap down.

Good advice. My dogs like cozy crates for traveling. If I don't crate them one wants to ride in the passenger's lap the whole trip! They are safer if they are crated, but I'll admit I'm lazy for short trips and just let him ride shotgun

thanks for the help. our cocker is pretty small so i think a small travel crate may be just the ticket. we have a petsmart right down the street so we can go try one on for size.. just have to avoid the upsell

I have found some nice crates at Big Lots for about half the price of the pet stores.
I use a soft sided crate for my 3 legged dog. He has a hard time keeping his balance when traveling.And it rolls up into its own carry bag.

We have a 20/30 inch crate for our cocker who is on the small side. He usually splits his time traveling in the crate and sitting in my wife's lap when on the road.

This size crate will also fit on the dinette seat if you want to crate in the airstream.

We have never crated our dogs (girl cockers). At the same time we do not wish them to become flying doggie projectiles if we have to stop suddenly or have an accident. So what we do is outfit them with harnesses (which we call their "bustiers"). We put the back seat of the double cab truck down. where they can ride. We made vinyl-covered mattress that fills the space, and covered that with a fleece throw. We use an industrial strength rubber bungee that doesn't have a whole lot give to attached thier harnesses to the hook behind the back seat that connects to the seat back (when it's up). This gives them the ability to move around the back seat, but they can't jump into the front and will not be thrown if there is a "situation." They have it so rough.
