Terry and Marie, Merry Christmas seems like empty words after Cookie's loss. But you know the good wishes are heartfelt from me to you two. Have a blessed day with your family.

I've found another photo of Cookie on my computer. It was earmarked for another thread, and she is not the focus of the photo, but here it is anyway:

Okay, the server seeems to be taking the day off. The photo just went *poof*, and it will not allow editing. I'll have to send off a message to headquarters...

She has been an evepresent part of our lives, keeping us out of trouble, watching our home and belongings, and being a constant companion when we were sick or hurt. When I was recovering from my injuries earlier this year, she never left my side, and woe to anyone that tried to mess with me.
Of everything that has happened to us over the course of the last year, this seems like the worst. I feel like crap.
Here is a picture I took of Cookie just yesterday, after we had played fetch. She was lying in her bed with one of her (hundreds of) toys.

As the owner of four dogs, I know well how empty things are right now. I wish there was something I could do or say to make it better. Academicly we all knwo that neither we nor our pets are immortal, but emotionally none of us accept that fact. Every Xmass starting next year you will think of her at this time of the year, and she will make you smile again, they never really leave.

You will spend several weeks trying to remember that Cookie is not right there with you. My favorite show dog died in 1981, to this day I cannot go visit his grave. I also kept trying to follow the regular schedule of feeding, letting him out, etc.... only to remember he wasn't there. He was my friend, we loved each other. I have never "replaced" him; however, I have allowed so many animals into my heart over the years that I know he's happy with me. I bred and showed dogs for many years, never having just a rescued animal on the property. Now...I have 6 rescued cats and 4 rescued dogs. Only one pure-bred in the lot. If you know anything about dog show folks, that's really something. When you can, give another animal or two a chance at the life Cookie loved. She will direct them your way.

Early photos
Here are some photos I was able to scan of Cookie when she was a 1 pound puppy. When she was really little, we had to place a phone book in front of her dish so she would be able to reach her food and water. Here she has a stuffed penguin by the neck, demonstrating her hunting prowess. All the stuffed animals trembled in fear when she was on the prowl...

It doesn't seem like she required any practice at all. Looks like it came naturally to her!
Thank you for sharing the pictures with us Terry. What a big personality for such a small dog!

I'm sorry I missed this thread when it happened. You both have my deepest condolences. I've been living with the thought of losing my pup every day for the last 7 months or so and it hasn't made it the slightest bit easier. I know it will still be unbearable when it happens. My heart goes out to you.

Cookie, plus one year.
A lot (almost everything) has changed in our lives over the past couple of years, and even more has changed in the 363 days since we lost Cookie. In one year, we have moved across the country, taken a job at Inland RV, gotten a "new" dog to keep our laps warm, gotten a new truck and B van, even helped out a forums friend with an ailing pet ( http://www.airforums.com/forums/f239...ack-43534.html).
I was notified this morning that Jack, the four-legged family member in the post linked above, lost his fight Friday, which got me thinking about our lost pet, nearly a year to the day of when we lost Cookie. We are now a continent away from where we were last year at this time, but that doesn't make me stop thinking about a small grave marked by a flush stone in the ground near where we lived.
While Sophie is not Cookie, nor will she ever be (I would never expect one pet to be the same as another) , she is a great dog, and a loyal and heroic companion in her own right. Sophie just jumped in my lap while I was typing this, she knows I am upset, but doesn't know why. My digital camera was laying on the table next to me, and I picked it up and snapped this photo. The composition isn't that great, I was lucky I even got any part of either of us in the frame.
Remember to pet your four-legged friends, you never know when they may no longer be with you to enjoy your company.

It has been a rough year...we lost two 4-legged friends, too.
it sucks, for sure.
