Beta fish in glass jar? with plants?

I wanted to bring my beta fish, "Gainsborough's Blue Boy" with me, as I feel everyone would ignore him and forget to feed him. But after hearing all the shaking that goes on, maybe it would be too traumatic for him to travel. Is there anyone else that brings this king of pet along with his plant top? Maybe if I hung him (his vase) from a gimbal, like on a boat, he would have a smoother ride.??? Not worth the hassles? Silver Suz

I'm afraid that the shaking of the open road would be much rougher than the waves of the open sea. Pet stores sell 'weekend feeders' that last up to a week....might try that, and leave him to a more peaceful existence....

Hi Suz, I have travelled with fish without any problems, but usually they are packed in bags and stowed in styrofoam. The change in water temp is actually more of a concern than the rocking around. Bettas like their water temp close to 80, which is why I'm not a big fan of those plant/bowl combos anyway. They really prefer a heated tank, at least up here in the NW. However, I had one in college who lived with me for a couple years in a gallon jug on my desk, with a desklamp over the jug for warmth all the time except at night. If your betta is exposed to fluxuating temps, unless he is particularly healthy, young, reisistant, or just lucky, they tend to get ill.

If you're just going on short trips, he'll be fine without food for a week, no problem. If your housesitter just remembers to throw a few flakes in every couple days, he'll still be fine. A bigger concern is overfeeding, which will foul his bowl, but even bettas don't care so much about that because they stick their nose out of the water to take a breath.

Good luck, I've had fishy-friends for about 20 years now, and even raised bettas. They're definitly my favorites!

What a great way to test if the running gear is balanced! We may try sans fish for the first time!
Unfortunately I'll be gone for months -I dont think the fish would survive that long. Considering my husband will be doing homework checks, afterschool drama and sports runs, taking care of a horse, 2 dogs, 3 cats, the chickens, a swimming pool that really likes to turn green (non chlorine system), 50 fruit trees , and my 14 yr old who tends to mouth off about chores ad infinitum, I wouldn't blame him if he forgot about the fish. Don't worry, the pond fish are rapidly being "taken care of" by the snake! silver suz

EEK! Pond fish don't last more than a few days at our house either! Well, give the travelling betta a try. I'd just lower the water level so he won't slosh as much, and seatbelt the vase down securely. He'll have a little fishy adventure along with you

A member of our Unit travels with a Conure and a beta fish. Ruth puts clean, rooted philodendrons in the top of the fish bowl. The plants keep the water in the bowl during travel.

I think the fish rides in the cab of the truck while they are towing. They travel all summer this way.

If I don't mind taking two dogs and a cat on trips, why not a fish? At least they don't wake you up for their morning walk!

Hah! I'm spoiled, my dog NEVER wakes me up for a walk. If I sleep until 2:00 p.m., he just waits patiently and quietly.

He's the best of both worlds, as easy as a fish and fluffy, too.

You could always call the Beta, "Cracker Surfer" because he is definitely going to catch some big waves and he may look like a sardine because he is in a "TIN CAN" ...........................Hah, "Tin can", get it? ....................................I kill me!
