What trailer do you have?
What engine does the truck have?
It should work just fine.

It's a Make/Model: 2010 GMC SIERRA 4x4 1500 SLE CREW CAB
with a Cyl./Tran: 8/A

We are looking at either a 30 ft or 34 Excella older or a 34 Classic
Something between 7500 pds to max 10,000

That's why we where considering the ecoboost f150 but was wondering if this one
Is just as good ANYONE tow with this one? blush:

Thx

Still need a bit more info. According to the link above, it's somewhere between 9500# or 10,600# towing capacity depending on a few more options you haven't listed.

These kinds of questions can evoke fairly heated debate (why I'm not exactly sure) but I'd say either way, you'd be pretty close to the manufacture's stated towing capacity and we haven't talked about a fully loaded trailer and truck for camping (humans, non-humans, tools, water, propane, generator(s), grill, clothes, dishes, etc...). Now if the trailer weight you quote is max trailer weight, you'd really only know by weighing loaded for camp at a cat scale. In my case, the max capacity of my 27' is over 7600# but fully loaded for camping comes in at a svelte 5880 :-). I've course, I have one of those 3/4 ton diesels that can tow 3 times that weight ... Maybe not smart their either!

You might also want folks who have experience not just with that truck, but with those 2 models o trailer you're looking at to get a sense of cat scale weights they've experienced.

If you're really at the 10,000# range on the trailer, my personal opinion (worth everything you're paying for it) is that isn't the right tow vehicle.

Good luck!

Thumbs up

I would decide on what cart you want before buying the horse.

You may not need a Clydesdale.

We tow our 04 28 ft Classic with an 07 3/4 ton Yukon 4wd 6.0 L with 4.10 differential, 4 speed trans. Your 1500 might have that same engine but with 6 speed and higer speed differential. It is adequate in the flat country or rolling hills but I think we will wish for more TV when we go to the mountains. If I was looking at a 30+ footer for a lot of towing I would go bigger. Our Yukon is a great driver but a gas hog when towing. You might look at a GMC Denali, I believe they may all come standard with 6.2 L with 6 speed trans. Happy hunting!

We have a 2010 GMC Sierra 2500 HD, Crew Cab, Long Box. 4WD, 6.0 Gas, 6 Spd Auto. We have towed our 31 ft. A/S from PA to CA -- over mountains, across desert, and back. It towed effortlessly in all situations. I would not recommend the 1500 version with a 30 to 34 ft. trailer. At least not for long distance travel. Not only will the trailer be loaded with cargo but, so will the box. That's a lot of weight. Get the 3/4 ton version.

Still want to know which motor- 4.8, 5.3, or 6.2-
And which rear end gears.
They will all have the 6 speed transmission.
4.8- marginal/slow/underpowered but will do it-
5.3- adequate/great towing experience-
6.2- plenty/git-r-dun-
I have towed with the 4.8 and the 5.3 many hundreds of thousands of miles.
My boss has the 6.2 425 horse/400 ft. lbs. of torque "Corvette motor" in his 2011. It doesn't seem as strong or quick/responsive as my 381 horsepower/400 ft. lbs. iForce Tundra, but will tow.

Also, I test drove an Ecoboost Thursday and was not impressed. Maybe you have to floor it to get those twin turbos to kick in. I couldn't ever get any response from the truck. It felt weak and slow. My Tundra responds with very slight pressure on the pedal. This could just simply be because the return spring under the pedal is stiffer on the Ford. It just felt like a big ole plastic hunk of junk in comparison- not for me. It was kind of a basic model- I like bells and whistles- leather-

You will get all kinds of opinions here.
Our shop truck is a 2009 version of what you are looking at, similar but not the same. It has a 5.3 and 3.73 gears. It is very good in the power department, but in towing ability, not so much. Everyone refuses to use it to tow larger SOBs, and we try to only tow 25' and shorter Airstreams with it. It is all over the road when towing, and I don't think any of us have the cajones to go much faster than about 55mph when towing with it.

For my two cents, we have a 2010 Chevy Silverado 1500 (I've been told the Silverado and the Sierra are near identical) with the 5.3L, Z71 and tow package (transmission oil cooler, think it has the lower geared rear axle too) and it tows our 30' 1968 Sovereign just fine. I forget what the weight is but it's probably 4800lbs or so and I'm guessing about 500lbs on the tongue. In theory we can tow 9300lbs, would I try it? Hell no..

First my disclaimer:
We're fairly new to this - boats were my thing before we moved to the middle of the prairies. So far we've done a few local trips on the prairies and one longer trip out to the Rockies from Manitoba. This is also the only truck I've owned so I don't have much to compare it to. The last thing I towed before this was a 17' un-braked boat trailer behind a 1.1L Ford Fiesta, which was, um, interesting...

On the prairies it pulls just fine but it has to rev a bit to keep to 100kph when you take it into the Rockies. I don't think the altitude helps. That said the higher revs bother me more than the truck. The biggest criticism is that the transmission and I have differing views as to the correct gear on times, but I'm from the UK and used to driving small engines with stick shift, so I have maybe turned into a control freak as far as gears are concerned...

Even without sway control the rig seems very stable. I know towing without sway control is less than ideal - I will be adding sway control next season, but more for peace of mind than to deal with a problem. Perhaps if I was towing faster I might notice something but I tend to stay at 100kph (~60mph) when towing..

Eco boost sounds interesting, but if my past experience of small engines with turbos is anything to go by, bear in mind that when those things are boosting you're drinking gas like crazy. If you only use that for a quick getaway from the lights or passing, then you're still ahead, but if your trailer is heavy enough that it has to use them a lot it might be cheaper to have the bigger v8 in the first place...

Hope some of that helped,
Rob.
