Just curious. How many miles between timing chain replacement? Was that a T-100?

You haven’t lived til you’ve done your own timing belt. I did so many I got the six hour job down to 2, on the Mazda 2L Diesel. If you’re off one tooth and kiss a valve you’re tearing that engine down.

Not to mention the trucks are gorgeous. Mine is 5 years old and looks like it just rolled off the line. Sounds like it too.

I’ll 2nd that. Ford trucks are about the best looking out there.

I replaced the first at 103k. The second I replaced at 154k when a head gasket was replaced. The truck was already apart, so I couldn't see putting a used chain back in when they are inexpensive. I am still driving the truck. It currently has 212k.

The truck is not a T100. It is a pickup or Hi Lux depending on where you live. The engine is a 22RE four cylinder.

Change of towing capacity guideline

Toyota probably changed the nominal towing capacity of the Sequoia in its user manual specifications based on a new SAE J2807 towing capacity recommended practice rather than any change to the vehicle. Based on climbing US 68 Davis Dam Grade out of Laughlin in 100-degree temp with AC on.
Probably time to change the 150-pound driver and passenger standard based on who's in some of those pickups.
When I was shopping I never found a 2008-2010 4WD Sequoia for sale that did not have the tow package, but it may be something to check for.

I ended up finding the Sequoia Limited, and you're right on the towing package anything over the base package had towing installed from the factory. Mine seems to have had all the options of the Platinum model except for the air springs, which I'm actually glad about. The vehicle is beautiful and seems really well made!

As to the towing standards, I think the change was due to the new SAE standards as well. I'm not worried about it's capabilities in any way for what I have planned.

I tow with a 2010 Sequoia platinum 4x4. It has 168k trouble free miles and have only had to change the brake pads twice and have yet to change the rotors. Never had a problem stopping normally or in an emergency. Absolutely love the rig and tows like a dream. I had 2001 Sequoia prior with 290k trouble free miles. Regular fluid changes and basic maintenance is all I have had to do. Reliable without question.Click image for larger version

Stretching is not the issue with timing belts. They can fail suddenly without any warning. It takes great care and patience to do them right. One nick on a new belt and I will also fail.

Chains are not necessarily fail-safe either. While I'm not knowledgeable about specifics of the vehicles being discussed presently... I can relate an example of how a chain can be problematical:
I have owned many Ford products but a 1983 Ford product (a Mercury Grand-Marquis to be exact but it was Ford's most-common V8 of the period) and at 65K miles the engine stopped running while at idle. The metal timing chain was driven by a metal crankshaft gear...but the cam-gear was phenolic (resin-impregnated-linen) and it disintegrated shedding small particles throughout the engine. The sump had to be dropped along with the timing-chain-cover, the valve-covers/heads and the engine pressure-spray-washed-out with solvent to wash-out at much as possible.
The cam gear was changed to an aftermarket metal gear and another 20K miles we sold the car.
Ford/Mercury dealer explained that Ford had used a phenolic gear for "sound/silencing" and it was common in the Lincolns also. It was the final straw for my Ford-products ownership.

The 2007-2018 Tundra's and the 2008-2018 Sequoia's 5.7L all have timing chains not belts. Thank goodness that Toyota made this change as the belts in the 4.7, while never an issue, had to be changed every 80k miles. I changed my belt 4 times in the time I had my '01 Sequoia. It was a pain in rear and took me about 3-4 hours each time. The dealership wanted around 2k and local mechanics wanted 1000-1500 to change. I did it for about 100 bucks in parts but still a pain.

I really have no idea what I will have to do about the new chain or if I will have to adjust, replace or leave be. At any rate I am close to 200k on this 5.7 and have had no issues and do not anticipate any based on years of driving Toyota's.

Regular oil and filter changes are the best thing you can do for the timing chain. The tensioner is hydraulic which is pressurized with oil pressure.
I have had Toyota's with over 300,000 miles. No problem with timing chain.

One caveat: oil changes must be done on recommended schedule to protect that timing chain. Learned the hard way on that one ...
