When you're trying to decide what size tow vehicle to buy you should be looking mostly at the axle ratings. All manufacturers brag about their towing capabilities but these numbers are much less important than the axle ratings.

A 27 Airstream will overload the rear axle of an F-150. Yes, you can patch that up with a weight distribution hitch but the hitch is not going to make the truck any bigger.

Hi

There is a lot of nonsense going on with truck "badges". The marketing boys very much love the idea of being able to shout about "biggest toughest 1/2 ton in the universe" (up from last years biggest on the planet ).

Just what makes a truck a F-150 vs an F-250? To some degree it's the options you can put on one vs the other. Put another way, it's a marketing decision.

A couple years ago Ford decided they wanted to shout more about the F-150. They fiddled with this and that. They *do* have a version that (by the numbers) can tow a 30' Airstream. None of the axles are over spec. The receiver is ok. The GCVR is inside the box.

Would *I* pull a 30' with an F-150? NO. However there is a version out there that "has the numbers".

One should clearly note that *unless* you get exactly the right options on the truck (and don't put much in it) .... it's not inside the numbers. You can't do the 30' trick with just any F-150. Truth be told, I would not tow a 30' with just any F-250 either.

We pull our 27FB with a 2017 Dodge Durango. We've now logged close to 10,000 miles - Florida to Nova Scotia - also the Blue Ridge Parkway and west over the Rocky Mountains up to 10,000 feet. (We're currently in Moab, UT - where this morning's temp was 25°). The advantage of the Durango is that it's very drivable/parkable car that my wife likes when we're not towing. It has the same Hemi V8 as the pickup, an 8-spd transmission and a tow cap of 6400 lbs. We have an Equalizer hitch and never had any sway problems. Our milage runs 12-14 mpg. It may not be for everyone, but we're very happy with it.
