Slimp wheels were popular in the 50's to alleviate the weight of heavy trailers from the TV. This is the early version of WDH. The 1952 photo shows me connecting our family trailer to our version of a 'slimp' wheel which was a dolly with an axle between two wheels. A small version of a big rig tandem trailer dolly between two trailers. I wish we had the slimp wheel kind because it was impossible to back the trailer with ours. We started our journey in Michigan for California on RTE 66 with out a dolly. Dad finally had to purchase the dolly in Texas because the heavy 26' trailer was pulling the back of the Nash apart.

The Long Long Trailer was a New Moon which was a popular park model trailer then. It definitely was not for casual traveling....especially towing with a '54 Mercury. It, however, made for a good movie.

Can't remember if they called it a "slimp wheel" in the movie, "The Long, Long Trailer", but I don't think they did. I don't remember them calling it a dolly either but I could be wrong about that.

When I was a boy, there was a VW Beetle parked with about a 24' SOB trailer, and a STEEL slimp wheel! It looked like a romance between a Rottweiler and a Teacup Poodle!

Look at the drawbar on the thing, if you can drag your eyes away from the wheel! It looks like it was modified, bent, had metal welded on, bent more, and had more metal welded on!

But - have no fear...it's back: vintage trailer AIRFLOAT like a lost in space airstream but this time it's "Lost in Space" instead of "I Love Lucy"
