I too live in CA. Had no trouble getting it smogged & licensed. No difference from previous years.

2014 Treg here. Its my first VW diesel and love every aspect of it. I plan to wait it out and see the final stage then will decide to keep or return...sigh.

We like both of our diesels ('14 Q5 and '13 Golf sport wagon) but with no approved fix yet on the 3.0L and the courts in Canada slowing the buy back process on the 2.0 (again, no buy backs have happened here yet) I am in no rush to do anything. In fact, I have a deposit on a shiny new 2015 Touareg Execline that cannot be sold till an approved fix is available and the longer that takes, the more cash I will have saved up to pay for it. As others have said, once they are gone, they are gone. It's what I want to tow with.

Links to TDI Settlement + New, CPO, Emissions Warranty Info

We've been looking for a nice 2008-14 Porsche Cayenne S (gas V8) for a while, & had left the TDI off our search due to the debacle - especially being in CA & long term owners of our cars.

So a couple of months ago when the early announcements of the 3.0L V6 TDI settlement came out, I checked with my long time VW/Porsche/Audi factories certified mechanic/tech (for 42 years now) whether we should now consider the TDI Cayenne in our search.

He said that - while it's a wonderful engine & engineering feat, & that all of his V/A/P customers who have them LOVES them (as is the case with those on here) - VW, Porsche & Audi are washing their hands of them & whenever the parts are gone, they're gone & the dealers won't continue to work on them at a certain point - sooner than you (me) think!

This is an Austrian guy who started with the top V/A/P dealer in Austria in the 1960's & loves their products!

So my advice would be to turn yours in, & look for something else which you like & will be supported long term. As with pretty much all of the Euro SUVs, the newer V/A/P trio of Treg/Q7/Cay are have now gone away from V8's to turbo V6's with similar or better power than the V8's (since 2015 for the CAy, Treg & Audi were 2014 or 13 IIRC).

So there's my expert tech's position & my opinion as a buyer - I won't touch a V/A/P 3.0L V6 TDI!

Good Luck!

PS - One other thing that my Tech Hans Assigal at Hans Imports in Huntington Beach CA had said about the fix, is that they will never run the same nor as well as they originally did pre-fix, so those of you with the fix may see some changes in power, mpg, running smoothly, etc. - either with the initial fix or the later stage 2 one.

You won't have seen any changes yet in CA with the smog test, because they're still running them as per the pre-settlement, according to my PCA buddy who was a DMV attorney before retiring.

Here is the official V/A/P Diesel Settlements info. to which the Porsche website links to for the settlement:

https://www.vwcourtsettlement.com/en/

IMHO you're probably okay for as long as the factory new car & new car emissions warranty (see next paragraph & link), &/or any added V/A/P factory CPO warranty runs, but you may want to consider other options thereafter.

Also be aware that the required Federal & CA Emissions Eqpt. Warranty runs longer than the new car warranty 8yr/80,000mi Federal & 7yr/70,000mi with more covered under CA IIRC - even if you don't have a general Porsche, VW or Audi CPO extended warranty.

See pg. 1 of your Porsche car's warranty book for the dates & where it's covered in the TofC....

http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessori...tion/warranty/

You VW & Audi readers can look likewise on those websites for the same info. which I have above for Porsche.

Good Luck to you all with TDIs!

Just bought a 2016 Touareg last Fall to pul our new Sport 22FB. Had we had the choice we would have opted for the TDI.

TDI and Hitch

Need some advice. In the not too distant future looking into a 23' AS and would like to pull it with a 2015 Touareg TDI. Seems to have more than enough torque and have questions about the hitch. Looking into a PPP. Does this sound doable?

I have a 2015 Tourag,TDI, and just purchased 25RB...headed to CanAm RV in London, Ontario for VW hitch reinforcement. Andy assures me the Tourag is an awesome TV. Call him!

The only problem with the CanAm hitch reinforcement is that they bend the steel support arm around the muffler to the attachment point. This weakens the support and lowers your ground clearance. Remove the muffler tub and run the support straight back. Reroute the exhaust to the sides either straight thru or with smaller inline mufflers. It doesn't sound bad with out them.

We have a 2014 TDI version and pull our 23D w/a Equalizer. I'm sure the PPP will do great! I see you're in the neighborhood, would love to see a PPP in action so if you decide to go that route I'd love to see it in person!

If your 23' AS or whatever you end up with is less than or equal to 600 lbs HW & 6000 lbs. Gross wet & loaded - then you can save some money off the full sized Hensley Arrow & Pro-Pride, by going with the lighter duty 6000#GTW/600# HW rated Hensley Cub.

They often have sales on evil-bay &/or their website, as well as refurb'ed used which still has their lifetime warranty, &/or you can get the basic chain tensioner model (rather than jacks). We paid about $1500 for the full adjuster jack version on sale back in mid-2013.

We got one in anticipation of getting a 2008-14 Cayenne S (still searching), & had tried it on rented similarly sized 2013 Nissan Pathfinders (gas 4.0L V6 & AT), & it worked great!

There several Treg/CAy/Audi Q7 TDI folks towing at this link below, but the settlement based reprogramming may affect performance &/or introduce new issues.

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f463...rs-134917.html

PS - FYI - Pretty much any of the Treg/Cay/Q7 can tow the smaller AS's with no problem, gas or diesel, with all rated at 7716# GTW & 600# or 770# HW - with some rating downgrades on the Hybrids & all Q7's due to heavier curb wts due to batteries or the longer 3-row Q7.

Good Luck!
Tom

I turned my 2010 in last week. I had bought an other car 2 weeks before. Had I not would another car I would have kept the 2010

During the turn in conversation I discovered that the states can not inspect while under the recall the VWs and the offer to surrender them goes till Sept 2018. If you are accruing less mileage per year than what is used in the surrender calculations you can actually make money by keeping the car.

Another interesting point or 2. I looked at a BMW 328d and that I am sure is a VW engine. Not under recall. If the snowflakes ever agree on a retrofit the cars in better shape will be retroed and resold.

No. BMW does not use VW engines.

But they probably should not do this while the TDIs are under the extended warranty that V/A/P was required to add as part of the settlement, since that exhaust change could give them an out to not honor the warranty.

IIRC from the owners I know here in SoCal, Porsche was adding out to 10 yrs/100K miles on a Porsche CPO for their TDIs. So I'd certainly give up a couple of inches of clearance to keep my 10 yr/100K warranty, if it were me.

Cheers!

Car manufacturers for the most part exist on buyer loyalty. I can not imagine VW discontinuing support-those buyers would be lost to them forever, and other people would flee as well.

I guess I am rolling the dice moment. Love my TDI, and am shopping for an F250 (to replace a work truck or 2). I have daily driven a truck for years, but for a while had a 150 mile daily commute that made it impractical. Now I drive much less except on trips.
