Umbilical and 7 Pin adaptor issues

The 79 Sovereign I just bought (yay!) has a "mini" 6-pin connector (see http://flickr.com/photos/davidascher...7594185303848/. The 87 Suburban I just bought (yay?) has a 7-pin connector. I'm in Vancouver, BC, but going to Portland next week, so wondering if there's a place I can order a cheap adaptor from online, that would save me the time to research what happens to the 7th pin, what the wiring diagram is, where to get things that fit in the various pine holes, etc.

Any ideas?

(while we're at it, any place in Portland I can get a 10,000lbd 2" 5/16 ball?)

I'd rewire the trailer to fit your tow vehicle, that's what we did. Went from a vintage connector to a standard 7 pin flat-pronged connector.

Check out www.drawtite-hitches.com ,look under Hitch Wiring/Electrical for the 6 pin round to 7 pin round adapter. It would be better to just rewire a new 7 pin round male plug though. It is a pretty simple job.

Look at Walmart or a trailer specialty store. They do make adaptors. I suspect your missing pin will most likely be the reverse lights. It wouldn't take too long to wire up the proper 7 pin RV plug on there. I would guess less than an hour, then you would be done with it. You will probably end up playing with the wiring anyway, I have never some one elses wiring job match up with mine...

I like the idea of getting one of ones at:

but unfortunately there's the problem of:

7-Way to 6-Way Adapter Elec. Brakes to Center Pin (A)

and

7-Way to 6-Way Adapter Elec. Brakes to Outer Pin (S)

and I have no way of figuring that out from here.

I'm trying to figure this out without the trailer in the same country as the TV, so it's a bit hard to do testing of the trailer bit. (I'm going to drive the TV to go pick up the AS on a Sunday, which will make getting parts on the spot tricky).

There's a place in Portland called Curtis trailers, and they have a pretty good parts dept. They are right off of I-205 on Powell. You might want to give them a call and see if they have what you need.

We would like to plug our Airstream to the truck. For that we need an adapter. Does anyone know, where to buy such a thing? On the first picture there is a truck receiver, on the second - Airstream cable.

Hello anna-marek. Welcome to the Forums. I don't have great quantities of vintage experience but did recall member uwe talking about the quality of the old round pin plugs (vs. the current 7-pin adapter). i re-wired the trailer end of the connector and it works, except for the turn and stop lights that is.

The tailights work and all the marker lights on the trailer except where a bulb is out.
I will reclean, reconnect after I make sure the truck output for the brake and turn sigs is powered up.
Getting there.

It took me awhile to get back to this job...the rear lights needed only raounds cleaned and new bulbs. All is working now, the umbilical works like a charm, and even those old fiber optic orange little light things are working, much to my surprise.

Nice to see the Sovereign all lit up!

ok I have since replaced my TV with a 2000 Excursion. I know the umbilical works as do the trailer lights, but there is no power to the connector at the back of the EXC. I tested with a 12v probe after finding out the Airstreams lights and the Prodigy brake controller were not coming on.
I see about 5 or so fuses listed for this including two larger 30 amp range fuses, one for brakes, one for the trailer battery charge circuit.
I can't imagine all the truck fuses are bad, is there any other thing I should be looking at to power up the trucks 7 pin connector, a master fuse or?

Alan, I seem to remember a post or two about a master towing fuse that may or not be installed by the factory. I also remember about a fuse box located under the glove box. I could be all wrong here, but I would look foir something like that. Good luck

I saw something on the F150 forums about that but it did not elaborate. Looks like Ford dealer time? I also see a grouping of wires with nothing attached to them under the dash right near the brake controller plug, lableled something to do with power, but not very readable. Thanks Richard for your input ...
