TV Tonneau Cover Recommendations

I just bought a 2015 Toyota Tundra with the Crew max cab (5 1/2 foot bed) and I am looking for recommendations for a Tonneau Cover. Some people have told me to go with a one piece painted cover and others have recommended a folding cover.

Have had a one piece A.R.E. painted tonneau cover on my 2000 F-350 crew cab dually for 14 years and would get another without hesitation. Have not had it leak and only four clamps hold it on. Have had to remove it a couple of times to transport large items. Since it hinges in the front, it's a little awkward sometimes to get to those things in the front of the bed, but keep things I don't use much up there.

Had a capper on my old truck and was bothered by visibility. The tonneau top allows you to see so much better and I had the same amount of 'stuff' under the tonneau as I did under the cap.

I have an Access tonneau cover (folding) and highly recommend it. I wanted the ability to fully access the bed and can walk around in the bed with the cover rolled up. It is top notch quality.

I have had both one piece and 3 piece tonneaus.

The 3 piece type—each piece came off separately—was ok, but didn't fit easily. I don't think it leaked, but this was a dozen years ago. It was light to remove and that was the best part.

I have used ARE one piece covers on 2 Tundras. Our "newest" Tundra is an 2007 and the '07 is virtually identical to yours except for 98,000 miles. The only problem with it is when there is water on the tonneau and I open it, a lot of water falls into the front of the box. I estimate it weighs about 100 lbs. and it can be difficult to remove and replace depending how strong two people are.

We are pleased with the ARE ones. They are painted to match Tundra colors although we always choose black to contrast with the truck colors. Long ago we had a topper on a pickup and it was hard to see through it (except for thieves I suppose). The tonneau is good for transporting camping gear safely, but bring a tarp to keep water off just in case.

Recently sold our Ram, had a Snug Lid one piece fiberglass tonneau, on it. Can't recommend that brand. While it was water tight, in 20 months I had to replace one of the hydraulic lift arms twice. Pegs broke right off the rod. Also, the lid would open on its own while going down the road.

One vote for Extang Solid Fold. Strong, easy to install/de-install.

Great quality, American Made, Excellent Customer Service and warranty. Very very happy with it, it's a hard folding trifold, and seals up nice.

They make them for Tundra's as well.

One piece roll up cover on all three of the trucks I've owned and own. I select a cover that allows full access to the bed as well as when closed fives me the ability to mount a full rack, on which we carry our kayaks.

I like the roll up covers because I can haul anything in the truck (such as brush) anytime without fuss. And because you can get a good one, installed for under $500.

Bob also check out the Roll n Lock covers. Really like mine. Well built and locks not only on the sides like most rollup/folding covers but also locks to the tailgate.

Things I wonder about roll up covers:

Do the roll up covers work when there's snow and ice?

How about dust collecting and then getting into whatever it rolls into and jamming it?

How easy is it to cut through the cover with a butter knife, Swiss army knife, machete, etc.?

I have the BakFlip VP cover. My research showed it to be the most waterproof of all the BakFlip covers. It has multiple sections but is covered by a vinyl cover that has held up very well for two years with my truck parked outside. 2010 Tundra Double Cab.

However, like all fold up covers, when when covered with thick ice you can't fold it back.

My Bakflip has two struts for locking it in the upright position should I need to have the full bed uncovered. Which I've down twice now with no issues.

Gene. No problem with snow and ice. Never had mine jam. Lubricate it with 303. Roll N Lock is actually aluminum strips encased in the cover. Watch the video on their website.

One thing to note with regard to folding tonneau(s), some fit on a rail below the bed sides (Bakflip is an example), some sit on the top of the bed rail (Solid Fold is an example). Some have their own locks; some use the locking tailgate as the lock. One advantage of the Bakflip type is that you can put Thule type bedrail racks on your truck for canoes/kayaks/bikes etc. without interfering with the tonneau. You can't use these with the 'top of bed rail' tonneau(s). An advantage of the 'top of bed rail' types is strength and simple mount/dismount.

I have had a couple of the soft covers that snap on all the way around the bed. Don't want to go that route again. My favorite tonneaus are the 3 or 4 piece hard folding ones so it doesn't have to be removed to haul large objects.
