Truck Weigh Stations, Safety Lanes & Mandatory PullOvers
Greetings Hex!
The states that I have traveled through exempt RVs from regular Weight and Inspection Stations so long as the tow vehcile isn't licensed as a commercial vehicle or in some places so long as the tow vehicle's license plates do not indicate a GVWR in excess of 16,000 pounds. I have passed through two check-points when towing my Overlander where all vehicles were being stopped and safety-checked. The items checked both times included tread depth on tires (tow vehicle and trailer), presence of safety chains on the hitch, presence of break-away switch connected to tow vehicle, operation of all tail light functions on trailer and tow vehicle. and operation of headlights on tow vehicle. Most of my travel has been to states West of the Mississippi, and this includes all of the states West of the Mississippi except Louisiana. The one exception to exemptions for RVs to inspection checkpoints are the Department of Agriculture check points found in several Western States, but these stops are short and not a great problem when they are anticipated.
