Probably C: Two aluminum wheels got damaged, and steel wheels at $50 each are cheaper than aluminum at $300 each. Or the repair shop could get steel replacements, but not aluminums.

Yep, somebody was trying to save money.

The factory shipped these with six aluminum wheels and a steel spare.

If it was about strength the center axle would need the least do to more stress from turning on the other axles, also there are tandem axle Airstreams with gross weight rating of 10,000lbs with aluminum wheels.

Could it be the aluminum wheel is in the spare carrier with a flat tire?

That would be two aluminum wheels in the spare carrier, so I'm thinkin' probably not.

Of course it may be that it came with six steel wheels, like my 1983 Excella, and a PO found a deal on four aluminum wheels somewhere and never got around to the last two. I've seen lots of adds for four wheels, but never for six.

However, my guess is that Terry got it right in post 2.

On edit: About never seeing six wheels for sale. Immediately after I posted I thought, "I haven't looked at the classifieds in a while." The second add is for six wheels and tires from a 1997 Limited. It sure doesn't take long for circumstances to make a lair out of me here on the forums.

Guess what is posted under parts in the forums dated Feb 14?
"I have six aluminum wheel that came off my 97 34' classic. The previous owner bought these from Airstream. They are the same wheels that were on a 97 limited. I just put on 6 new marathons size ST225/75R15 that only have 500 miles on them."
So if someone is looking for all six, for $1K they are there.

Maybe I can get some luck in purchasing some replacement side emblems. I've never seen the "International" Side Emblems being sold either. I've looked around inquired, but cannot located them for a 1972. I've got one in good shape the other seems to be warped. I was going to pull them off and paint them, but thought until I can get replacements, or if I can't that would be the last resort, I'll hold off. They've held up great for 41 years.
