You know...? There is no smell from the exhaust of a modern diesel.
The tailpipe of my Ram could pass the white glove test after 2000 miles
Pretty amazing!

Modern gas engines have way more torque than any diesel.

Hi, We don't like the Diesel smell or the sound of marbles in a trash can. All of the proud Ecoboost owners posted their payloads, but the Ram people are politically dancing around their sub 1,000 lb payload numbers.

All the more reason to ditch both the Ram and the Ford and get the best of both worlds with more payload ,towing and mileage with the Gm twins and the 6.2 max tow.

One gets what they pay for. The "if it fits, it goes" crowd need lots of load capacity. The other extreme are folks that can camp two weeks on one pair of underwear so a light weight vehicle works for them.

Doing lots of research on the real world numbers of proposed tow vehicles as well as an honest self appraisal of all the "stuff" needed to be carried along with the possibility of a bad case of two footitis two years down the road are just some of the factors to be considered before signing any purchase order.

There are lots of posts in this forum of the disappointment associated with getting an undersized tow vehicle and then having to make an expensive trade-in change in the first year of ownership of a tow vehicle

Within reason, some over capacity is better than being undersized.

For us, the 2012 Ram 2500HD Cummins is the perfect marriage for our 2014 31' Classic that weighs 9,200 pounds camping ready with full water and propane tanks. The 2007 Mercedes ML320 CDI is the smallest tow vehicle we could use for our 23D and we are close to the axle limits when we have our stuff both in the car and the trailer fully loaded.

We have different expectations for the two applications.

Take our 2012 Ram 1500 Hemi for example. Four years, 50K miles, never a single repair, never short of power or braking, never short of load capacity for six months travel throughout the country, rock solid on the roadways when properly set up with a quality w.d hitch, within $4500 from new purchase price allowed on trade-in with full discounts, incentives and 0% interest on a new one.

What a disappointment.

So much so we got another one; we took our new Ram 1500 Ecodiesel for a long drive yesterday, highway and heavy city traffic, 31 mpg. In the 1200 miles since recent purchase the new disappointment has averaged 28 mpg overall.

Within the week, we'll hitch up our FC 25' and head out for another 3,000 miles about the country. We're looking forward to it.

I thought that I would jump in and just add a couple of comments on the Ford F150 3.5 EcoBoost engine. I have two, a 2011 F150 Platinum and a 2015 F150 Platinum. Both used extensively towing either a 25FC or 28FC and a horse trailer. The 2011 which I still have has 145,000 miles on it and the 2015 has 48,000 miles on it.

Most all of the issues with moisture accumulation in the turbos are in high humidity States like TX and FL. I live in TX and have had no problems with the moisture issue. his is caused by an air cooler (CAC) prior to the turbos, which causes condensation in some instances. In 2014 a mod was made which a deflector which appears to have resolved the issue. The only issues encountered with my trucks is an intercooler failure on the 2011 which was covered under warranty. In 2015 they changed the location of the intercooler helping resolve the issues which caused the failure. On the 2015, just had a sensor in the throttle body fail which again covered under warranty.

As far as trucks go, both I am sure are great vehicles and a personal choice, The EcoBoost has plenty of power and torque and I have gotten good mileage from both of mine and been happy with them. We have pulled ours through CO Rockies and up into and through Canadian Rockies with no issues.

Good luck with you decision, as I am sure you will be happy either way you go.

Chuck

It all depends how you outfit it. My 2015 Ram 1500 door sticker says 1,681 payload.

No dancing, my 1500 was 1250 payload door sticker.

I'll say this about this forum; the payload issue is either completely overblown or entirely ignored. The reality is somewhere in the middle.

Don't overload your vehicles and know how you'll use it.

We're like Doug, a year and half of ownership, we loved our 1500 Ram Laramie 4x4 and are fulltimers. We did just upgrade to a 2500 Powerwagon - but my reasoning is completely different and I explained it in another thread.

The newer Airstreams do make payload a big issue.

My '98 had an original hitch weight at 610, and 760 when I loaded it up. I now read of folks listing +/- 1,000.

And my base weight was 6,840 while the new ones are 7,400. Not sure where all that extra weight is coming from. The floor plan looks the same. And my rig has solid oak face frames and cabinet doors. Maybe it's in the axle and frame.... my GVWR is 8,600 compared to the new ones at 10,000.
